Well according to an Telecom email I just recieved

"Dear Andrew

Thank you for contacting Telecom.

At this stage we do not have any plans to sell the iPhone GS, however, if you were to purchase one that meet our specifications you could connect this to our new XT network. For more information, please see http://www.telecom.co.nz/phonecheck

To view our current phone range, please see http://www.telecom.co.nz/mobile

If you have any further questions regarding Telecom products and services please visit our web site at http://www.telecom.co.nz

Kind regards,

Sharon
Customer Care Online"

Thats from a tele Rep so I would say that it is fairly accurate

jesterz:
benedictx: The 8GB iphone 3G from Vodafone NZ currently costs NZ$979 without a plan while
it used to cost US$199 for the same phone in the US with a contract. So using my powers of theoretical maths:
(NZ$979/US$199)xUS$99=NZ$487
So maybe NZ$487
The phone is out in July in New Zealand

This sounds really interesting ... I would actually be tempted with a $500 iphone off contract on XT. Maybe need to lower my expectations! :-)

Chances are it won't but if you add in variables like our recession and using a low price point to lure potential Apple converts it does make a sound marketing choice.

I believe that the 8GB 3G iPhone will be to the iPhone 3GS what the MacBooks were to the MacBook Pros. The Pros were expensive notebooks which only high-end users or multimedia firms could purchase so Apple created an affordable MacBook line for everyday Joes (especially Students) who didn't want to or couldn't afford the expensive models.

Now that they've raised the bar and practically turned all MacBooks into Pros while still maintaining their low-ish price points current MacBook users would be comfortable venturing into Pro territory. If you apply that to the iPhone model, lowering the 8GB 3G iPhone to an affordable price could entice people to try an Apple product and once they've gotten hooked onto it's system chances are they will eventually migrate into the more expensive models. It will be a slow gradual change however so I don't expect this group to switch to the 3GS model but I predict that a significant number would get the new iPhone 2010 next year.

I've watched the keynote and I couldn't find Telecom's logo on the board when they announced the carriers.
They might get the phone but so far on the Vodafone forum it's pretty much confirmed that they'll be brining
it in.

It will be. It will be sold the same way the 3G is unless Vodafone want another HUGE backlash.

And if they are smart it should be at the same price (16GB at $979 etc)

I dunno.... I think there still might be some negotiation going on between Apple and Telecom.... I've spoken to a few mates and they wouldn't say yes or no.... but he was hopeful that they would.

Yeah no doubt there is. But I still don't think Telecom will get it at the same time as Vodafone

Its kinda surprising one of the biggest cellphone releases ever and Vodafone and Telecom weren't on the ball from day 1? I would of thought this was priority number 1. Or are there outside influences here? And or is apple dictating and taking there sweet time?
