Axe: So, prices:

8GB 3GS $599
16GB 4   $899
32GB 4   $1079

Can't find any 4GS prices.

expect 4S prices to be expensive,

a quick gander over at the OZ site shows these price points for unlocked devices in AUD

16GB $799
32GB $899
64GB $999

at todays exchange rate this would suggest at least $1300 for a 64GB NZ version , with the 16GB  around $1050 and 32GB @ $1175,

Might be time to replace my first-gen Touch. The new 64 GB model is $84 less than yesterday's price!

NZtechfreak: Even though I expected this to be an incremental update I'm still a little surprised at how little Apple brought to the table.

I expect lots of 4 owners will pass on upgrading to the 4S.

Real interesting thing will be to see how this affects which mobile OS people want in their next phone, doesn't look likely to curb Android's growth in that area, particularly when Androids will have significantly better hardware months before the iPhone 5 release next year.

Interested to hear from anyone here who was waiting for this announcement to decide iOS or Android?

I expect the majority of iPhone4 owners will be 1 year into a 2 year contract, so wouldn't be upgrading yet anyway.
the iPhone4S is more of an upgrade option for those who purchased 3Gs on a 2 year contract, and from that POV it's a pretty cool upgrade.

Does anyone know if there are any additional changes to the iPod Touch apart from adding a white one and 64GB one to the range? Did they get faster CPUs, better cameras, or other hardware upgrades. The reason I ask is that the NZ Apple store is currently showing the black ones as available now (including the 64GB one), with the white ones available Oct 12th. I want to know if I ordered an 8GB black one now, would I be getting new hardware.

It looks like the hardware hasn't been updated. The previous generation also had 64 GB.

Oh, I didn't realize there was already a 64GB model.

Stink. I'd been holding out especially for the new refresh, including passing up opportunities to save about $70 on the current gen (which looks like may be the same as the new gen). Guess I didn't win the Apple lottery this year. :-)

Yeah, I was hoping for an update too. I knew that there was already a 64 gig because I checked the old prices last night so that I could compare them :)

Old prices were $387/500/663.

Yeah I'm unimpressed with this update too. Especially with the battery life, it even said it was slightly less battery life over Wifi than the iPhone 4!

I'm on a contract-free 3Gs so I may just wait for a price drop on the iPhone 4 instead. Will they still sell the 32gb iPhone 4 or will it only be a choice of 8gb ip4 or a 16/32/64gb ip4s?

Thats an excellent point. The "special" I missed out on was $313 for the 8GB one, so the new RRP of $289 makes it worth the wait after all. And now I can decide whether I want to get her black or white. Black has been her preferred colour of late (thats teenagers for you ;-)), so the white one may not be the way to go.

Was hoping for a new design but for everyone hoping for that there's probably another saying 'thank god I don't have to buy all new accessories to fit the new design'.

The 4S would be a no brainer as an out of contract upgrade from a 3GS, but I'm out of contract now with my 4 and not convinced. If Siri runs on the 4 I'll definitely wait for the 5. Could be the excuse to port over to XT, see if the grass truly IS greener...

Reading how Sprint had to commit to buying millions of iPhone, it's easy to see this is just a stepping stone.

Apple wanted to have economy of scale, CDMA is not the greatest thing in the telco world outside the US anymore, so a single model that runs both CDMA and WCDMA would be good for their margins.

Basically it's just saying to the US telcos "here it is, we are making it easier to get the device on any carrier (operator)".

For the consumer this is a small tech refresh - update the CPU to a dual core, knowing too well that the previous generation was fast, but not enough for current demands. And putting a second antenna, after denying that there was ever a signal problem (and people bought that explanation)...

Disappointing. If this phone had the screen stretched to the side bezel and down a tad and up, to 4" it will have made a letdown much less so.

For me:

PRO
Much added featureset with Siri and photo/video, assuming these are only on 4S which has to be the case.

Accessories still fit

Dual Core, extra graphics, but just a catchup

Looks like same price for 4S 64Gb as 4 was for 32Gb

CONS
Same size phone, not a biggie

Same screen size, a biggie

If the screen was bigger it will have been the same type of evolution as the Galaxy, added hardware, bigger screen, and while you can say the extra 4S ony features are very good, the screen increase will have ticked most boxes.

So, is 4S worth upgrading to? Maybe, but an issue is that, is the 5 under development with what we expected today, and being released in 6 to 8 months??? If so, a big GRRRR

The Oz Apple site has a comparison, 4 doesnt get Siri or photo/video enhancements which must all be hardware based I assume. Oddly, battery talk time is a tad better but standby time is less from 300 hours to 200 hours, how can that be?
