da5id: I popped into Telecom at Westfield Manukau today and talked to the guy there about buying an iPhone 5 outright *waves*

He said there was no such thing. Only iPhones on contract. I begged to differ and pointed him to geekzone and this thread, which we both checked out instore, and which shows posts about buying at Telecom stores and DSE stores.

He still found it hard to believe, saying that the phones could only be sold on contract and found it hard to believe that DSE were selling them at all.

I wandered across the road to DSE and they were indeed selling them, but had all sold out :(
I think the DSE guy said they'd sold 16 or 20 in the last few days and they were taking customer orders for them.

So, there's a lot of conflicting information out there. The outright bought phones are definitely out in the wild but some Telecom stores aren't aware of it, or perhaps some stores are selling them outright without permission?

That is a pity, but I am sure you will find that it is an exception. I am at Telecom and us, and the stores all get the new info.
You can buy an Phone 5 on an Open Smartphone plan, which has no contract, and they are very good. While off course Telecom wants you to stay with them, its not on contract.

He did say that people had done that. Hmmm, perhaps I misunderstood?
For some reason, I thought the phones were available just to buy outright. Might be a mistake on my part then. Apologies if he is reading.

No apologies needed, happy to help if I can.

Sounds to me that you were talking contract and he was meaning account. You will need to buy the phone on a plan, which requires an account number, which can be created if you don't have one, and you will have the first bill and plan, hence the $29 plan being used by those that quit.

Hope that helps. While I work for Telecom, I think its pretty good that they give this option, knowing that some will buy and cancel. They could easily have just added a 12 month option for a bit.

I just got my iPhone 5 32G

I went to DSE first and there are none in stock in Auckland any more (The Branch rang around ) also and said there _might_ be one in Queensgate or Riccarton but they didn't think where would be now. DSE have no ETA when they will get any more in.

Then I went to Telecom Store and got mine on the $29 Open Term.

For Auckland people, Telecom Glenfield Mall appears to have a bit of stock. Will post my own impressions on the phone later.

Did anyone here who bought their iPhone 5 from telecom also purchase their 13.95 per month insurance? The lady at the St Lukes store said that I get the first 30 days for free, which is the only reason I bought it as I had no intention of staying with telecom. But when I rang 123 the next day to cancel my open term contract the person said they have never heard of the first 30 days being free. I know it's dumb to question 14 bucks when you're purchasing a thousand dollar phone but its more just out of principle. Is there anyone who can shed light on this matter?

Telecom is absolutely the worst when it comes to first line customer service.

I've had customer reps tell me conflicting information (You absolutely cannot do this/you absolutely can do this), on broadband, telephone, and mobile departments. I guess normally it's the outsourced first line call centres.

It's like they have no idea about any of their products and how they work.

I'll admit that once you get higher up the chain and to actual NZ techs, they are ok.

On the other hand, I've had pretty good service from customer reps on Vodafone.

The last online order I placed with Apple which got delivered from China was about five years ago, so my memory is a little hazy, but I think it came direct to Auckland from Hong Kong, or it might have gone via Singapore first. Your order will be sitting in Hong Kong until a scheduled flight, which may be on Monday or Tuesday. It should make it to Auckland by Tuesday, and could be delivered to major centres on Wednesday. Even if it does go via Sydney it could go Hong Kong to Sydney on Monday, and arrive in Auckland on Tuesday.

I'm in a similar position: iPhone 5 (64 GB black) ordered from the Apple online store about 1:26 AM on launch day. Mine is scheduled for delivery 29/10 to 2/11, and hasn't gone to "preparing for shipment" yet. Given that yours shipped on Friday, I'm hopeful that mine will ship from China on Monday.

The lightning cables and adapters I ordered arrived in three separate shipments from Sydney. They all arrived in Wellington one business day after they shipped, travelling via Auckland.

Thanks for the info! Delivery estimate from TNT is the 24th, so that's looking pretty accurate. Hopefully all of us who ordered on day 1 get their phones this week!

Now I don't work for Telecom, and am not affiliated with them in any way apart from being a customer but I just wanted to say that I have just had really good (actually great) service from the Telecom Retail store in Westfield Mall Riccarton today.

I was served by a young lad named Ben.

I walked in with questions around iPhone 5 such as "given that other retailers such as Dick Smith are now selling outright are you" and "how does the 'open' plan work" and "what plan options are available" etc.

I have to say that Ben was completely aware that DSE were selling outright and took the time to explain what options Telecom could offer.

I ended up getting the iPhone model I wanted on the $29 open plan (which actually isn't too bad) and he explained the procedure once the month is up how to revert to my previous "on the bill" plan. (I am a very small time phone user and typically run my phone for around $22 per month on the bill).

Considering they had a shop-load of people I felt important to him and that he took the time to fully explain everything I needed to know and go through the (seemingly endless!) paperwork.

Ben, if you read Geekzone - cheers to you, you are a great representative for your company. If not, I am sure other Telecom staffers here will read!

Yep, sure, Telecom and other telco's don't always get it right - but here's one example where they did at least - coz it's not offen we get to hear this!
