I'm happy with my iPhone 11, (AKA Galaxy S8). As for face unlocking, I don't have a great success rate, same with fingerprint unlocking. You often have to stare weirdly at the phone holding it unnaturally in front of your face, and then it still doesn't always work. Finger print reader on back of phone is a lost cause too. But I'm sure Apple will invent a new supper pattern swipe unlock for their next phone.

Other than the over hyped marketing that comes with Apple; yes they are good phones and the time will come in due course to replace my wife's iPhone 6 with either an 8 or X, but that will be next year.

I find the face unlock somewhat awkward as well - although it's technically iris pattern unlocking in the Galaxy rather than full facial recognition I think.

The fingerprint thing actually is fine if you have a case: the cutout for the camera and scanner guide your finger to the right place much more reliably than the bare back of the phone.

I might go to the X (or X2 or whatever it is to be called ) when I am out of contract on the Galaxy.

Still have way more storage on the Galaxy - 64Gb internal and 256Gb SD...! And a headphone jack.

I wonder if it will be the X2, or XI (11) . It reminds me of apples OSX naming, where they may just add an name onto it, and get rid of the numbering. They have stuffed up the numbers now, because they missed the iphone 9, and if they have two grades and pricings of iphone, like they have this year, then what do they name the iphone 8 replacement?.

I think you'll need to get the Verizon version, which seems to have the same bands as the NZ version. Make sure that it's unlocked! [Edit: That's for the 8. Apple's site doesn't list the bands for the X yet]

I think iPhone X looks quite good to be honest. I have been waiting for apple to lose the fat around its screen. The spec bump is not that impressive. The camera is still the same formula. As a iPhone 7+ user, i dont see the need to stump out enough money to buy a pretty decent laptop, for a phone. So I am out of the race for pre-order.

The iPhone 8(+) is nothing ground breaking. Gadgets always do become faster, year by year. The most standout feature in this year would have to be the wireless charging. Its about time. I recommended to a friend of mine who is jumping ship from Android to iOS to go with the 8+. The extra $x dollars is not worth it for the iPhone X - you get a better design but the iOS experience is the same.

I dont remember seeing "fast" charging (or "fast wireless") charging being mentioned anywhere. Anyone know about this?

As always, there will be lots who either really love the iPhone X and some who dont. Its up to the individual to decide whether they need to upgrade their existing phone for whatever their reasons are. Some want to be on the cusp of the bleeding edge, some actually do need to replace their old aging devices.

I personally dont see any reason for iPhone 7(+) users to upgrade. Unless you have the burning itch.

As a 7+ user, I'm not instantly turned on by either the 8+ or X. 8+ is heavier then a 7+ and the changes don't amount to much, more like a 7s+ and the X is just so expensive. Maybe if real-world reviews show there are no issues with the faceID I may be tempted but I won't be doing a pre order.

The faceid thing supposed to work by basically just picking up the phone. But yeah the integrated touchid+screen is probably going to be the best implementation.

The A11 looks great along with dual OIS cameras.

Also seems like it's the other mobile operating system's supporters who are claiming that ios mobile operating system users claimed that apple invented a bunch of stuff.

On the other hand, non-terrible OLED screen hasn't been out for long.
Remember colour shift and weird colour tint in mobile devices with OLED displays? Even brand new OLED that just came out recently are having uneven colours (LG V30).

And same thing can be said regarding 4G/LTE. iPhone was one of the few early ones with integrated 3G/4G modem on a single chip that was way more efficient.
Even though phones with other mobile operating system had 4G/LTE on separate modems but was basically unusable since the battery life were less than 3 hours when browsing with 4G.

I suspect there will be more than a few disappointed iPhone users. Particularly those who have been purposely holding off upgrading while patiently waiting for something new with the 10-year anniversary model - only to see the 'X' priced too high for them, with the next tier down iPhone 8s still priced well over $1,000 (ie. flagship prices) but retaining the same tired large-chinned chassis of the last three models. Heck, they didn't either bother to upgrade the screen resolution or move them to OLED!

Other than the screen, touch ID and price, what are the other differences between the 8, 8+, X?

I can so see Ms Arden giving all new mothers an iphone 8 for good measure.

Between iPhone 7 and 8 it really seems to me to be: Wireless Charging, new CPU and about 20 grams heavier. iPhone X IMO is too expensive.

Interesting price differential with Australia - if you find yourself over there anyhow, arguably cheaper to get one there and get the GST back on the way out..

I think they are milking that 8 design, because it is a 3-4 year old design, that has been facelifted. IMO there isn't enough reason to upgrade to the 8, because it looks like an old model compared to the X, so there is not even that wow factor to it. Guess it has wireless charging which allows people to charge and listen to music at the same time, but you can get a fantastic android phone that is closer to the specs of a iphone X for that price.

The other thing with the iphone X, is why are they so stingy with the storage. IMO it should have come with 128GB as the base model, and 512MB for the top of the range one. Especially as you can't upgrade storage, and this is supposed to be their pro/top of the range device apple sells

I can also see many people disabling face ID because it is not always easy to have your face close to the device to use it. Then they are then force to type in a code, and it doesn't even have pattern codes like android. Face ID also has potential security issues, where if you are forced to access your phone, all they need to do is point it to your face. Whereas the iphone 8 has touch ID which is is pretty foolproof , quick and reliable, as long as you have good fingerprints.

Likely no NZ CGA coverage though. Paying extra for apple care to offset that could be false economy?

Just read that page, not much information there - it seems the only other difference is the 8/8+ weighs more.

Wonder about front camera, RAM, water resistance rating.

Just asked the missus, wants to stay with Apple ecosystem. There they have one customer already. (What's wrong with old phone - umm ... recently involved in an accident)

Screen burn is the other potential issue. I believe that using OLED is going to have a short life in future iphones, as I beleive they are looking into new LED screen technology that has all the advantages of OLED, and none of the disadvantages.
