mattRSK: I had a look at one today, thought the screen quality was a bit average.
mattRSK: Compared to any IPS device. This will come out with a retina display in no time I bet.

mattRSK: If Steve Jobs was still around this never would have been released. Has there been other Apple releases of old technology?

I give it 7 months.

I think it will be 12 months. I don't think they will release it too soon, as they have only just refreshed almost their entire product range. I think a full apple tv wil be the next big thing, as I think there will be a lot of demand for that if it was well priced with an IPS panel. But I think apple products have now lost their shine, as other manufacturers are now producing products as good. The fact that apple actually compared the ipad mini with the nexus on their own stage is a sign of this, I don't recall them doing that before, comparing one of their products with a side by side photo of a competitor.

It's brilliant business though. Release "new" product with obvious feature omissions.
Add back those omissions and proclaim v2 to be "the best thing to happen to this new product since this new product".

Not really though. Because they want people to buy the product now, and not wait for the next one. They want people to buy this current model, and then also buy the next one too. If the current product they rel;ease is using old hardware and the competition is using the latest hardware, then people will buy from the competition. Both the ipod touch and ipad mini are both using old 18 month old technology. When the ipod touch was released for the 1st and 2nd gen, it was using the latest techonology. Infact at one stage the ipod touch had a faster processor than the current iphone at the time. Now it is a generation behind.

I think you missed the point...

The iPad mini will be in strong demand this Christmas worldwide. Are you telling me that the target market for this product understands that it is 1.5 generations behind the game?
mattwnz: But I think the ipod touch sales will likely fall from the ipad mini being sold.
littleheaven: So, what are they like? What do you guys think of the image quality and speed? I'm curious to see how they measure up to their larger counterpart.

Very happy with mine so far, not at all concerned about screen res - looks pretty crisp to me, but then I am upgrading from a gen 1.
But the attention to detail and build quality is just phenomenal, way better than I expected and well worth the extra cash, and I am an industrial designer so I have high standards!
The form factor is just right for me, ipad 1 was just a little too big and heavy to use for long periods, the mini seems just right and I have small hands. Sure if they bring out a retina version it will be even better, but really it's not a deal breaker as this does everything so well you just cannot complain once you start using it....
