I think Airplay will come before TVNZ OD App (I emailed them, got a pretty much boilerplate response - they are monitoring demand and if it appears to be demand they may look at an app....)

I wouldn't hold my breath for airplay either.... they don't appear to be doing much.

Apparently Neon is going HD too but who knows when.  There is no app for that but airplay is supported.  I wonder if they are doing an app for it... does anyone know?

A Fanpass App would be great. Neon, meh, but the more the better.

Neon in HD via an app would make it less compelling for us to continue to subscribe to HBO Now. The pricing is similar for both services, and the user experience in the latter is very poor. It is especially bad at keeping track of the content you watch regularly.

I thought I would start watching GOT now that they are up to season 6 ;-)

I have never seen it before.  I know it's in SD but it was slightly cheaper than HBO.

As mentioned already, you don't need an Apple device to control your ATV. I use my Harmony One remote with everything - TV, home theatre, PVR and ATV. If you want to stream from your Samsung, there are Android apps that allow you to do it, for a small fee. http://gizmodo.com/how-to-stream-anything-from-android-to-airplay-1578516449

Makes me kind of glad I didn't get HBO.  Paying for it seemed a pain too given you can only do it via Apple ID so need to have a US payment method.  Not sure if sky will try to put the price of Neon up once it goes to HD... wouldn't surprise me but it's already overpriced IMO.

So let me get this right.
If I have an NZ Apple ID and a US Apple ID and want to RENT a movie through the ATV (4) then I only need to log into the ATV using the appropriate ID and I will be able to complete the transaction (possibly re-entering the password) without resorting to having to log in on a PC? And then it will only be playable on the ATV.
I have an NZ credit card logged against the NZ ID and a US card against the US ID.

And more of an itunes question than an ATV4 question, but I noticed some movies for sale only and not for rent. In this case Deadpool , is this the norm? Anything to do with its imminent release on disc?

I'm pretty sure that's the case. There's a whole movie/tv show app store on there if you're logged into the US iTunes account. It works the same as if you're using iTunes on a phone or iPad.

That is exactly how it works for me.

Neon have stated publicly they have an Apple TV 4 app coming. Remains to be seen how long that takes to turn up.

I believe developing for Apple TV 4 is relatively simple, particularly if you have iOS development experience (which either Neon does or the third party they are paying to develop their apps does). The hold up would be with Apple's reveiw processes as per pretty much always.

I too don't have any audio equipment connected, but I do know that there is lots of evidence of DD+ and 7.1 not working as expected.... you may want to read this regarding the audio.

http://developer.dolby.com/News/Dolby_Audio_Support_on_Apple_TV.aspx

Yeah, there are lots of comments in the FireCore forums about this kind of thing.  It seems there are limitations in the chipset in the Apple TV (or the firmware, but only Apple would know that).  5.1 DD is good, 5.1 DTS can be a pain if your playing back local content (as in not every player handles it) and 7.1 seems hit and miss.  However I wasn't aware that iTunes rentals came in anything more than 5.1?

Not many... Terminator Genesis comes to mind.  Maybe Netflix/HBO offer some?

Last week when I looked Terminator Genesis was still buy only and not rental..

So I went ahead and got an ATV4, the 64GB as a local Harvey Norman had them at the 32GB price as an opening special. Setup initially had me flummoxed as it wouldn't accept my AppleID. However after hitting reset to start all over again, it did a firmware update, it then was happy with my ID, and all is good now.

Rented and watched a movie last night, Spectre, and was reasonably impressed. This will certainly suffice as a solution to a 20km drive to the video store.

For others that use their ATV4 in a Home Theatre setup, in the audio settings, do you leave it on 'best available', or select it to 5.1? My HT receiver reported the audio as "multi-channel" and the sound was definitely surround (particularly in the first helicopter scene) but I wonder whether 5.1 would be better.

I am also impressed by the CEC. Putting the ATV to standby turned the receiver and projector off. If I can program the Siri remote to do the Receiver volume, all the better, but I'm not holding my breath.
I will also search to see if the ATV IR codes are on the Harmony site. Although the Siri remote is so simple to use volume on it would be even better.

Edit: Fixed auto correct.

That should be possible. Our Siri remote controls our Pioneer AV receiver volume with no problems.

So... the PlexConnect that I got it working well with ATV2 decided to pack itself in the weekend... Tempted to replace all ATVs (2x ATV2 and 1x ATV3) with ATV4 32GB and move on up to the tvOS.

Where's a good deal for now?
