NZtechfreak: Even though I expected this to be an incremental update I'm still a little surprised at how little Apple brought to the table.

I expect lots of 4 owners will pass on upgrading to the 4S.

Real interesting thing will be to see how this affects which mobile OS people want in their next phone, doesn't look likely to curb Android's growth in that area, particularly when Androids will have significantly better hardware months before the iPhone 5 release next year.

Interested to hear from anyone here who was waiting for this announcement to decide iOS or Android?

I think this is a very exciting update.

as has been pointed out many 4 owners are one year into a two year contact. this update is not aimed at them. it isn't aimed at those wanting top specs either. yeah as far as a real update goes, its a joke.

I would say those cheap prices on the 4 8gb are aimed right at mid range android owners. the 4 is comparable to todays mid range androids. at a comparable price with possibly a better eco system and definitely better accessories.

if my defy died today I would be very tempted. I think mid range android is a shark tank but that looks like the fight apple just picked.

for the dude wanting an ipod touch. last year harvey norman was doing the 8gb for 280, the catch is that it was on boxing day. teenagers are not noted for their patince.

Didn't anybody tell you I was a hacker?

Thanks for your replies. Another point in favour of the Galaxy S2 is that it has a removable 1650mAh battery. I'm not sure whether the 1420mAh battery of the iPhone 4S is removable or not, can anyone advise on this please?

It's not in Apple's DNA to have removable batteries. Nor is it likely that they'll ever have swappable SD cards. Their business model would have to change significantly to adopt those things.

Having said that, I suppose you can never say "never". But don't hold your breath. :-)

Galaxy S has gone to its new owner. HTC Sensation has gone to its new
owner. Galaxy S3 has gone to its new owner. Now using Galaxy Note 3. Skipping Note 4 I think...

Overall, do you think current Android owners would be sufficiently impressed to switch to the iPhone 4S?

I doubt it. Apple fans will buy if they're coming from a 3Gs as it's a large improvement over their current handset, but there are already many Android phones out there that exceed the 4s's specs. So unless you have decided that you hate Android, WinPhone and RIM, there's not a lot of compelling argument to make for switching to the 4s.

I suppose most people wouldn't need a second battery for their smart phones, but if you are using it as a portable GPS for walks etc, this can use up battery power. I realise that it's best to have a dedicated GPS for tramping etc but for casual use, a smart phone with a replaceable battery would probably be a reasonable option?

Thanks, yes a worthwhile comparison and the comments from readers below it are interesting.

The iPhone 4S has an advantage with its SIRI language commands, but it's interesting that the RAM of the 4S is unknown and stated to be "likely 512MB". The RAM of the Galaxy S2 is apparently published as 1GB.

I think the Super Amoled display of the Galaxy S2 might be an advantage over the IPS LCD of the iPhone 4S?

I agree with one of the comments which said that each of the phones compared are excellent and that it would be nice to own all of them!

Fred

Yes, they are all great phones. We all have our own tickboxes, and with WP7 maturing, more choice again

Googled it, the overseas sites are confirming 512. Edit, wrong, might be 1G depending on what site you go to.

I felt that too, as an iPhone4 user. But now that the dust has settled, is this much different to other manufacturer new models? Not wanting start a war, but Galaxy to Galaxy S2 was generally similar? Yes, the bigger screen they produced was a great move.
If there wasn't so much hype, which created "rumours" aplenty, it does seem a good in ternal hardware upgrade (although late) and a good function upgrade. But just a catchup.

Am I seeing some kind of trend here?

The iPhone 4 had a major hiccup - "the grip of death".

Now the iPhone 4S update has disappointed most people due to the lack of major upgrades and innovations.

Strange, you'd think it will have been black and white now.

Given that it won't be available for pre-order till end October and when it arrives here who knows, and how will Siri work in reality who knows.   Time to reflect and see how it goes, plenty of time to ponder.

From what I see, the difference is same form factor and same screen. If they had changed, it probably will have met most expectations. The photo at stuff.tv was a slimline, and the general rumour was a 4" screen which really had been deemed to have been widely expected as a done deal. Too much expectation, but if it was same form factor with a 4" screen, ideal for me. I think the added functionality in photo/video combined with iOS5 is a nice move ahead.

But, its just an improved iPhone4, nothing more.

Debin: Interesting update. Just annoyed that they didn't increase the screen size. Well not annoyed, because I love my SGSII, but yeah. Maybe will consider the next one which I am pretty sure will have a bigger screen. 3.5 feels too small after the 4.3 I have currently.

But then again, Nexus Prime :O

Or wait until the SGS3 comes out :-)

The SGS2 should meet your needs more than adequately in the meantime?

I agree that it has been a failure only to those that were expecting a MAJOR redesign.

It still has industrial chic, but for the average iP4 owner - apart from the 64gb option (which has been sorely missing) - I see no good reason to upgrade.

It does make me wonder if the rumoured iP5 was just too problematic to launch and whether we'll see something in early 2012 fro Apple...

My two pennies sees this as a product targeting the wider American smartphone market stuck in CDMA land as Apple have opened up their American Telco base there with this product.

It's one way they can maintain (grow?) market share as Android offerings (like SGS2) begin to bite into their bottom line. And the dual core processor and iOS5 improvements are pretty incremental but set them up for the i5 next year and keeps them in dual-core country now for all those wavering towards Droid and Mango offerings that'll appear in the gap
