We're about to acquire a new iPad, and none of us yet have an Apple/iTunes ID.

With the content restrictions applied to NZ, is it possible, or is there any value to being 'American' when you first create your Apple ID?

I can't remember why, but I have a US iTunes account and NZ iTunes account and there is no problems switching between them if that is any help.

The US iTunes store has more movies than the NZ store, and TV shows as well which aren't available in the NZ store at all.

You can easily create a US account, but to fund it you will either need a US credit card or US iTunes store gift cards. You can easily buy these on the web, but an administration-type fee is charged so you pay more than the actual value.

We have both US and NZ accounts. We download most apps from the NZ store but get our media from the US store, usually through our Apple TV. My wife is a flight attendant so she just buys the gift cards every time she's up there.

Just be aware that while it's not illegal, it's a breach of Apple's T&Cs to do this.

It is very explicit

"The iTunes Service is available to you only in the United States, its territories, and possessions. You agree not to use or attempt to use the iTunes Service from outside these locations. Apple may use technologies to verify your compliance."

If you sitll choose to go down this path, getting and account is easy. Funding may be slightly tricky.

Thanks for the replies. Went with an NZ itunes account initially, just for the simplicity. The app 'Dragon Dictation' seems to not be available for NZ accounts and would be very useful so we may go down the dual itunes account route soon. We have UK credit cards and addresses so might try that zone first..

NOPE (well sort off)

just Google Starbucks and get a postal address, download iTunes, get a free app and your fine to create a new account (using the Starbucks postal address)

To get credit, jump on ebay and buy itune gift cards on there. They will email you the code and your good to  go.

In other words, you're using a US address and US voucher... which is exactly what Gehenna said!

Not quite, he pointed out that you can create an account without any credit card or voucher by "buying" a free app.... but if you want to purchase apps, yes you will need some kind of US credit card/voucher

Correct. The method posted will only get you free apps from the US store. To buy apps you still need a way of funding it.

Paypal US will not fund from a non US credit card.

Most NZ credit cards I know so far will not work due to the issuing bank/country that is determined from your credit card number.

Apple IDs.
You cannot merge IDs,
Apps /Music etc purchased stay connected to the IDs used to buy / download them.
You cannot split IDs or the apps purchased if you share with someone else then change your mind..
You cannot cancel IDs. You just have to stop using them.
