Our school has 5 new iPads and we wish to set them up to have the same apps and groupings as the 1 we already have. Is there an easy way to do this please.

You should just be able to set them all up with the same apple ID and then back up the first one you set up to the icloud.

Once you log the rest in they should all sync the same :)

nope. the best you can do is, create a custom configuration profile with wifi ssid/password and email accounts settings all pre-configured and have it downloaded to ipad buy going to a link on skydrive or dropbox where the custom profile is going to be stored via safari.

Do whatever you want to do man.

If they are all on one Apple ID, you can erase 4 of them back to factory settings, then when you reconnect to iTunes, you will have the option to setup as a new iPad or from a backup. Choose the backup. That is how I cloned my iPhone 4 to 4S and iPad1 to 2 to 3.

From then, each time you sync, each of the 5 iPads has its own sync settngs. Make them the same and all will stay the same

Thanks folks. All using same apple id so can load apps ok. Guess the issue is getting the app groupings the same as the original. Just trying to make them look the same for the kids to use (primary school). And save some time as I know this is only the start with more to come :)

What's the legality of this? You could then theoretically have one paid app being used on 4 separate devices by 4 different users. I would be checking copyright laws before doing this...

No probems, 1 user who owns all the devices (i.e. the school), 5 devices. iOS supports up to 10 devices and computers per apple ID.

The application software license terms for the software you choose to use is what determines the answer to this question.

Longer term, the other administration option is this. You need a Mac to operate it:

You need 4 itunes accounts and 4 copies of the apps to be legal. One itunes account can be used on 10 devices however all the devices must be used by the same user.

There are probably different licenses for schools. But I would think if the school owned all the devices, then they could share the same itunes account.

Thanks for all the advise.
I have access to both Mac and PC so will try the configurator.
Made do with with using the restore from backup feature in iTunes thus far but with more on the horizon then using the configurator may be quicker.

Configurator might not work for the App side of things, I have tried this in the past and it has required all of the apps to be volume licensed, currently volume licensing for IOS apps is only available in the US although its rumoured to be not to far away for NZ. Apple are working out the licensing issues with this now.

On a different note if you are after a device to charge and sync your iPads all at once I recommend the Griffin Multidock, it holds 10 iPads, will charge and sync all of the iPads at once and its lockable. I have be trialling a demo unit but they will be available in NZ shortly.

Apple has just announced volume licensing for iOS apps for education, link below to register.
