I got an iPhone 5 at launch and ever since have been using excessive amounts of data each month with little explanation. I browse a little bit but nothing that would allow me to exceed my data plan I have.

I don't have broadband/wifi connection where I live and rely on 3G for facebook/browsing etc. I don't rely on it too heavily, however have racked my brain trying to figure out why I'm using so much, compared to the same usage I was using with my 4S on iOS5, with no issues.

In the first day of having my iPhone 5, I used over 1gb of data and I had barely even used the phone!

I've googled it and people overseas seem to be having the same issues but no real explanation as to why it is using so much! Tired of having to fight the charges on these high bills as I know I'm not (intentionally) using the amount of data I'm being charged for.

Anyone else having the same/similar issues? Any fixes?

There will be apps in the background downloading stuff , On an android phone you can see which apps are downloading stuff and manually turn them off over 3g. Not sure about the iphone.

Do you have Google Mail configured on your phone? Another user found that his iPhone was consuming a lot and found out it was Google Mail.

you have icloud over 3g enabled?

wife has iphone 4 and ios 6 and struggling to use 200mb a month (yes we have wifi at home but we go out a lot)

how much data do you have? i'd say you'll need at least 1gb per month but over one weekend definitely excessive alright!

such high usage must be either constant syncing or repeated attempts at syncing ...

can't think of why push notification would use so much data ... what apps are running in background?

no tethering/hotspot?

nongeek88: This article might help provide some clarification around the exact issue - http://tidbits.com/article/13304

There are multiple possible issues. That article covers some of them. Here's another one:

Streaming issue causing higher data use:

http://labs.prx.org/2012/11/14/ios-6-0-devours-data-plans-causes-cdn-overages/

The guy who wrote that says it was resolved with 6.0.1.

Are you on 6.0.0 or 6.0.1 ?

Could be anything really, but in light of issues reported elsewhere you would be wise to run 6.0.1.

Thanks, have upgraded to 6.0.1 although I'm not sure if this has fixed the issue. I'm on XT and got a 70% usage alert on the 19th (after upgrading) and found out last night I've used almost 170% of my data since that date.

Reading that article it suggests they have fixed the wifi issue, however as we are rural and can't get broadband at home, I'm relying solely on 3G. So I'm guessing the problem I'm having will still continue - unless every time I turn off cellular data when I'm not using my phone for browsing etc?

Besides the upgrade, have you checked the other questions here? What do you have updating? iCloud? GMail? Location services?

that's not the point ... you are treating the symptoms not the root cause

there must be something transferring stuff ... you need to find out what it is otherwise you will still chew data at a rate proportional to your 3g speed when you turn cellular data on

you have not attempted to help/contribute in the diagnostic process so no one is able to help you

I run Gmail on my iPhone 5 and don't have a problem with usage... so maybe not that?

Not everyone using GMail will have the same problem. Bugs appear depending on different conditions...

Is XT able to tell you where the bulk of data is going?

Ideally you would run it on wifi for a day with a network monitor on the connection.

I had trouble with the podcast app & podcasts getting stuck downloading in the iTunes app which used up 500 mb in a morning (despite having my phone set to only download over wifi). But after deleting the downloads from iTunes (on my phone) I haven't had any issues since & have my phone set to auto download podcasts over wifi. Hope you find the issue soon.
