this is quite a long story so i will start with the TL;DR.

for about a week i have had issues with wifi not connecting at home, I get a popup in the style of a captive portal login but it simply says "sucess"

also I have has issue with my desktop not connecting to apple store, error -50, network timeout.

ISP is telstraclear cable.

I have has the Iphone5 since the day it came out, no issues till last week.
about a week ago i purchaced 5 albums on my phone from apple.
three tracks dident download, they kept getting stuck as "try again"
then i found that application updates and pod casts would not download either.

google sujects that a reset of network settings on the phone might help, it did not help :-(
google also sujects that a full sync with itunes on a dekstop can help.

my Itunes would not connect ot the apple store for username/password (error -50)
downloads stuck with network timeout

at this point i decided to re-install itunes, that was harder than expected because i could not get a clean download. the download kept dropping out at about 20%.
NOTE: other websites seem fine.

so I did a full re-install of windows XP and then Itunes.

Itunes would still not let me login to my account, error -50.

then I tried a VPN to france, and it worked.

5 tests in a row.
with VPN and it all works.
with out VPN it wont work.

also of note, wifi at a friends house worked as expected, with no popup.

I get the feeling that the issues might all be connected with my ISP.....

anyone got any thoughts?

According to what I read on the net, there are issues of wi-fi connectivity with the newer iPads and the iPhone 5.
I know that for myself the wi-fi on my iPhone 5 and iPad 3 is very sluggish, especially when using some of the apps that require downloads from within the app.

It seems to take ages to download a Kindle book via wi-fi when it really shouldn't take that long at all, considering the size of most Kindle books.
If I do it via 3G it is way faster.

Some people claim to have had luck with getting a new modem or by turning off the QoS (Quality of Service) setting on their modem (see the thread HERE). Still others say to turn off the 'g' wireless setting and just have it set to 'n', rather than a combination of both.

I had trouble finding the QoS setting on my Thomson modem (the one that Telecom gives out). Eventually I managed to disable it via the CLI (Command Line Interface), but I don't know whether it made any difference, and also when I turned the modem off and on it was enabled again.

I'm still trying to find a cure, but it is a problem for some users....

Interesting, I got a couple of Ipod Touch to use as wi-fi camera's and couldn't get them to work on our old crappy router at work, we replaced the router with a new one and it worked right away, I assumed that the old router didn't support the correct frequency for the Ipod touch, which I assume is the same as the Iphone 5. As a side note both Ipod's didn't work, but all our Iphone4's did.

My opinion is that these issues still have something to do with the modem; have you tried any other wireless modems to test the issues out?

In my own case I still use the very old Telecom Thomson TG585 modem and it seems to be working fine with
all my devices at home, including the new iPhone 5; in terms of speed there is also no significant difference as my partner is using iPhone 4 and getting the same sort of connection/download speed as my iPhone 5.

I also use an iPad 2 and Macbook at home and they all seem to work fine with the wifi router; even my old first generation iPod touch has no problem connecting to wifi

So maybe do try a separate wifi modem/router?

I am using a WRT54G router, and this issue is only in the last week.
I have had the iphone 5 for 8 weeks, no issues till last week.

I dont expect this to be a router issue, but i can check some settings....

Hrrmmm personally since updating the os on my ipad 2 I've had problems connecting with wifi. All other wifi enabled devices connect fine :/

Is there a way to roll back to the previous os?

now fixed.

issue was due to using openDNS.

openDNS has issues with akaimi servers, you get routed to server closest to your DNS server NOT your own location.

this means that i was getting routed to an akaimi server in USA, and then that was timing out.

when i re-pointed to local DNS servers, i get a local akaimi, and all is good.

Just did a quick check for software updates on my iPad2 and yup, says that 6.0.1 is the most up to date version for my device.

Fingers crossed they'll roll it out.

Why do you think changing the DNS fixed this part of your problem that you mention in your opening post "for about a week i have had issues with wifi not connecting at home, I get a popup in the style of a captive portal login but it simply says "sucess""

Just that I too have had this message start popping up following upgrading my iOS to 6.0.1.
