Hi Guy's,

I have a 4th Gen IPAD 4G + Wifi, and I absolutely love it!

However I only have the 16GB version.

I am travelling at the end of the month to the USA so thought I might get a larger version there.

My plan was to get a larger one on the way home either from Hawaii (if I can find one duty free) or from JR Duty-free when I get back.

The main reason I need a larger one is that with a few apps and some music there is no room to add movies.

I really want to have most of my music, around 40GB all the apps I want, around 10GB and some HD movies. To me that means even a 64Gb is going to get full quickly, unless I choose to manage what I put on there.

Am I being rediculous in wanting all my entertainment in one place?

Also I have looked on TradeMe and prices for second hand Ipad's seem quite high, but that is what people are asking, not what the items are worth!

I have a 5 month old Ipad4 16GB 4G+wifi, what is it realistically worth?

The condition is perfect, it hasn't got a mark on it as it has been in a keyboard case from day 1.

Just FYI I was in the states a few weeks ago. I spent a fair bit of time in the shops looking for an iPad mini for the wife. Electronics on the whole were not much cheaper once you added sales tax and currency conversion. All stores I went to had the same prices for the iPad range - also the few sales I went to and discount vouchers I had all excluded Apple products (much the same as here). In LAX (not sure about others) there is no "duty free", there is tax free but there were no electronics in the airport apart from a Best Buy vending machine (and their prices weren't that good).

So based on that I purchased an iPad mini from JR Duty free inbound to Auckland.

Hi,

Disclaimer: I am fairly biased against Apple/Ipad, etc but this should not impact my answer (too much)

I think you shouldn't try and buy a new one just for storage purposes, especially, if your idea is to put all your entertainment in your ipad. The resaon is that this is not sustainable. If I'm correct, the biggest ipad you will find has 128Gb storage, which sounds quite high but ask yourself what will happen when your music library grows bigger and you want to keep storing it? What if you find that you really like having lots of movies/shows on there, chances are you will outgrow this bigger ipad and you will have nowhere to go (unless Apple puts out a bigger ipad in the meantime, which is fairly possible but you can't just rely on this..)

Like Wade, suggested, you should look at other options. Something like the Seagate Satellite seems pretty good and it instantly gives you much bigger storage space. (albeit at the cost of user friendlyness because you have to lug around an extra piece of kit)

Also, having the storage separated from the ipad gives you other benefits. For example, if your ipad breaks or takes a bath, you will only have to buy a smaller one (cheaper) because you know you don't need all the storage rather than having to buy all that storage again from Apple (at a premium). And if lose it / get it stolen, all the files that were on the HDD are not lost...

just my $0.02

Guillaume

Thanks all, I didn't even know about the HDD option, that looks good, however I am still finding 16GB too limiting, as I use the Ipad on flights so a wi-fi HDD wouldn't be usable in that situation.

But it also means I can think more along the lines of 32GB rather than 128GB.

Also I do understand that there is not much difference between NZ prices and US prices.

In Hawaii converted to NZD including tax
64GB = $1019.18
128GB = $1142.12

JR duty free
64GB = $1069.00
128GB = $1199 (assumed)

The advantage of Hawaii is that I know I can get the one I need, JR Duty free can be problematic with what they have in stock.

Out of interest, I have an IPad 3 64gb wifi unit and when mobile have it tethered to my phone as I use it as a mobile office. I had to rethink my usage as well when I started to use iMovie on it as I kept running out of space.

I think one thing that is important is that tablets are not really designed to provide storage and compute capability that laptops and desktops are. As I see things, tablets are designed to provide a snapshot of that capability.

The alternative is to take a look at the next device up the chain, such as a small mac book air or touch screen laptop which has the increase in storage (but likely with a compromise such as battery or size).

I have decided that I do "need" the 128GB wi-fi + cellular version.

I don't want to carry another device around, as it kind of defeats the purpose of the ipad IMHO.

My brother is getting me one from Aussie duty free for $899 AUD or $1096.00 NZD at todays rate.

As a bonus he has asked to buy my 16Gb one from me and offered $600 AUD, this means the upgrade cost is actually $299 AUD or $365 NZD so a bargain really!

Now just to get me Apple will release the next Ipad on 1st May just because!

As a bonus to all of this the Aussie version is the same as ours.

Are those prices for the WiFi versions?

If so, you'd be better going into a store here before you go and asking them what their best deals are.

64GB WiFi is $1028 incl GST here, 128GB is $1178

Of course if those are for the 3G/4G versions, then it is a lot cheaper at those prices.

Ok, I ended up going with the 128gb version, and it has about 20GB left after I have everything that I want on it.

I am happy with my purchase and as it worked out I was able to leave my old Ipad with my brother to use until he returns from the US next week.

When he returns I will sell the old one (16GB 4G+wi-fi) and recover what I can.

Seagate wireless plus is the solution for me. Store your movies on this 1tb harddrive, and it has built in wifi hotspot webbrowser, battery powered, and tiny. Works nicely, interface is a bit clunky .

Buying an ipad from overseas is generally not that much cheaper than buying it here and you lose the protections of the CGA.

eg, buying the 64gb ipad with no wifi -- NZ cost is 1029.00

USA cost after exchange rate + 15% GST (assuming you don't take the risk of not declaring) is around $1004.  And, you don't have the CGA to protect you.

Then, maybe you can get it on one of the local sales here, and even pay less than the USA cost.

I did think about the wi-fi external drive options but when on a plane you can't use them.

I got my Ipad from duty free in Australia and it has an international warranty, outside of that I can send to my brother for any further claims.
