Hi all

I've got an iphone 3gs which I'm having a problem with.

The iphone works fine but when I insert a sim card, it picks up the carrier and then seconds later the screen goes blank and the phone looks like it's switched off. If I turn on the phone again, the apple logo comes up but it seems to hang there.

I notice that a split second before the screen goes off, the screen blanks, a few random lines appear and then off.

If I remove the sim card, I can boot up and the phone works fine - no issues

I've tried both 2Degrees and Vodafone sims with the same problem.

A hard reset (power & home button) didn't help

Can't seem to find any mention of this issue on the net

Running iphone 3GS, 32GB, ios 6.1.3

Any thoughts?

Issue is not SIM card but handset from the description you have given

I bet those 2 SIMs work fine in other handsets?

I'd suggest that you've got a logic board fault - when the radio chip is activated your phone is shiutting down pointing to an issue in the radio part of the board however it's far too expensive to trouble shoot this on a 3GS so suggest that you look to sell it for parts and buy another phone.

Have you restored the phone?

That would be my last resort, then it may be time for your Iphone to become an Ipod :(

Going to try that and if that doesn't work will try a ios downgrade. I'm an android user myself (S3) and am not that familiar with Apple

Which is a shame as the phone is my son's and he worked hard to upgrade from his ipod touch to get this iphone.

I have suggested he have a look at android , especially when you can get some reasonable handsets for around $200 (ebay - huawei G510 for $215 delivered) but he has a bit invested in apps with ios - plus I like the itunes card system over a credit card for him to purchase apps.

Just remember that you can't downgrade iOS without saved blobs - if your phone isn't jail broken then you won't have the blobs.

Is this a second hand phone, from eBay?

Also, if you're thinking of buying an Android, you can get some devices for that price, from New Zealand retail, which gives you more warranty rights than eBay...
