Those are some eye watering prices.

Yep! But obviously there are people who want them now, so they'll pay up!

aren't those in line with the rumored standard prices anyway?

I thought the lowest price 5c was going to be between $1000 and $1100, and the 5s around $150 onto of that.

I think the 5c is supposed to be about $800 and the 5s up round the $1050 mark. That is the pattern they have followed since releasing the iPhone 4. Drop the previous gen price by $200 outright and bring in the new gen at +- the same price as the previous gen was originally. They just couldn't do that with the 5 and 5s because it costs too much to make a 5 casing so they dropped the guts of the 5 into a plastic case to keep costs down and then release the 5s as the new big daddy.

Not far off I would have thought.
Going by AU prices, the 5C  here will be about $999 (the iPad4 64GB there is AUD759, here it is NZD1029, the 5C is AUD739 ~NZD999
By the same logic, the 16GB 5S is the same price as a 128GB iPad (AUD869), the 128GB iPad here is $1179.

IMHO, too expensive for the new phones (when you compare to what you get for under $1k from Android/WinPhone)

That's the pricing I heard for the 5C and 5s too.

They did the same with the Nexus 7.

It's supply and demand - if people are willing to pay it, why not.

Particularly the rabid hordes of early adopters that MUST HAVE IT NOW.

Those don't look much different from what VF were charging for the 5 when it came out here.

If you have a 5 there seems little point in spending the money to get the new one; I shall wait a year for the 6.

If we simply covert the currency based on the AU price, the iPhone 5C 16GB would be NZ$831 and the 5S 16GB NZ$978.

Considering NZ has higher GST than Oz, I would expect the 5C would go for around $900 and the 5S at around $1050.

NZ Apple prices are usually higher than the converted AU equivilent, I assume because of the GST component (And possibly slightly higher average logistics costs)

On a side note, It looks like we accidentally ordered two iPhone 5S 32GB in Space Gray instead of one. Going to return one unless someone in NZ really wants one and wants to make it worth my while?

I'm in Australia but will be in Wellington on Friday. Phone should arrive to us tomorrow or Wednesday.

When the iPhone 5 came out the official pricing was $1379 for the 64gb.

$1049 was the 16gb I think from memory.

The PB tech prices are pretty high but their own margin is probably negligible.

Okay. So what's the point in the iPhone "5c"? I thought the phone was supposed to be cheap. There's nothing cheap about it. You can get better Android phones for a fraction of that price.

c probably stands for colour, not cheap. It is targeted towards young females I think, who don't want a geeky android phone.

Saw that, for that price, and if you liked ugly phones it isn't a terrible deal!

My answer to this is a couple of posts above. Normally Apple would just introduce a new iPhone and then discount the previous gen, but the iphone 5 costs too much to make due to the case design so they put its guts in a cheap to make plastic and steel case apply the Apple 1 gen old price discount and laugh all the way to the bank. It is not an answer to the mid range androids, Apple have shown time and again they have no interest in that market. It is not a cheap phone to gain market share in China, People I work with say the pricing is a joke in China. If you can afford the 5c, you can afford the 5s. It is purely about being able to offer a "cheaper" phone that does not eat into their profit margins.
