I use my iphone5 a lot for facebook, apps and browsing the net at home but I find the small screen to be annoying especially if I am looking at websites or game guides while on the PS3

I was thinking of getting a reburbished ipad 16GB, which I've seen for $300, the cheapest going. However I know it won't take IOS7, no cameras, old connector and not retina, 4 things I have on my iphone so might bug me on the ipad.

Now I've seen the ipad2 16GB is $450, ipad3 16GB is $575 but ipad4 16GB is $579, not a lotof difference in price so I am seriously considering a reburbished ipad4. I only want 16GB as my music is on my iphone5 and don't plan to store lots on it.

What do you think?

16GB iPad 4. Get the latest generation you can because it will give you the most longevity out of the device in terms of OS and app support.

If I just got the wifi version could I connect to 4g by using my iphone5, either by a cable, using my iphone as a hub or using the sim card?

What would be the main benefits over the iphone5, guessing bigger screen and better for games are the two?

You can tether to your iPhone's data plan and use the internet on the iPad through the iPhone.

Benefits are clear - bigger screen, bigger battery, etc

I think 16GB isn't really enough considering many apps are now over 1GB in size and will only get bigger. When you are paying that sort of price, you are not paying much more for a new gen ipad mini or an ipad air. Personally I would never buy a second hand one (unless apple refurbed from apple) as the second hand prices are way too high in NZ.
If you can find an ipad 2 for $300, which supports ios7, that maybe a good option for you, but as apple still sell it, they still have a high second hand value to them. The ipad 1 hasn't been support for some time, so isn't really worth much, I wouldn't pay $300 for one.

^I used to think that but really all I keep on my iPad are apps and photos. I don't have any music as it's all iTunes Match. So I never go over about 50% storage capacity on my 16GB iPad or iPhone. It was different back when I was syncing music to them.

So I reckon 16GB is plenty. There's only a handful of apps/games that cross the 500MB-1GB mark, the vast majority are sub-150MB and well below

I just had a play with the ipad4 in the store and it felt kind of heavy if I will be using it in bed for example, maybe thinking of splashing out for the air as it is a lot lighter. You guys find the weight an issue with the ipad4?

Plus there's no pre-orders on the ipad air and no proper prices yet, Yoobee said mid November they will get them.

I would hang out for the ipad air, as it is a lot lighter and also thinner, and it will have a longer like in terms of ios updates. How about the mini retina as possibly more portable, or do you want the larger screen? Apart from the screen size, they look to have the same specs.

Its more for home use for games, videos and apps, I will probably only get the wifi version and use it at home so the screen is probably more important than the portability.

In that case, definitely get something bigger. 16GB is way too small once you start putting games and videos on it.

I have a 3rd generation model which I think is the same weight as the 4th generation, and when I use it for long periods of time I find that I get a bit of fatigue from the weight - it's actually heavier than you might think. I will probably replace it with the Air early next year, and I'm looking forward to the 28% reduction in weight.

I tether my IPad (3) and Laptop (Windows) to my IPhone (4s) using both Bluetooth and WiFi, I then use my mobile data to access the internet when I am out and about. At home, I just use my home WiFi connection and broadband.

Although I have not got an IPhone 5 so cannot confirm this, I believe that IOS7 for IPhone 5 and later supports AirDrop. I think this may allow file transfer to the IPad (4). Perhaps someone else in the forums could confirm this.

Usually when I am looking at buying an apple device I have not seen before, I go into my local department store when they are not busy and ask them if they can demonstrate the features to me on their in-store devices.

Now for the 3 most important questions :)

Should I get LTE just in case I decide to use it / find the iphone hotspot drains battery too much / would it add mroe vlaue when selling it if I was to in future?

Should I get 32GB rather than 16GB as I will only really be using apps such as facebook but I want to get games like Final Fantasy / Chrono Trigger / Infinity blade iwork / ilife so not sure how much these will use. Wont be keeping music / videos on it, will use thigns like you tube mainly.

Finally the most important question, which looks cooler, grey or silver? :P

I've had the WiFi one and my wife has the 3G one. She swears by hers because she is a teacher and her class has no WiFi. So she is able to do everything she needs to do with the kids using 3G.

I've never found it to be a problem not having 3G myself, because I always have WiFi where I am, or if not I have my iPhone to tether to and I don't pay for the account.

So not a big deal.

However I'd get a 3G next time purely for removing that step from the process - because as you say when you tether you're using the battery of the iPad AND the iPhone so it's a killer if you're doing it a lot. I'd rather keep them separate and use my iPhone as a tether for my laptop on the small occasions I need to.
