My understanding is that it's only the exchange bit they've stopped supporting - and only then, when a new device is purchased, on an existing device it should continue to work (if it was previously being used on that device). Failing that, fetching/imap through the iOS mail app should still work.

Thanks, I may try that, although more of a hassle to setup, and to find all the settings I need to use.

Is it the same device, was the iOS device restored or factory reset etc?

It is the same device, just a simple IOS ugrade from 6 to 7, and never done any factory reset.
Ham: It will keep working until you restore from backup
