Looks like the iPhone is due for release in just over a month in the US and still no-one on the net appears to have gotten hold of one for a decent hands-on preview.  So we're still left with rumour and supposition to tell us what features are available.

The EverythingiPhone site looks like it's compiled everything known about the device (accuracy unknown) and here are a few pearls:
 - uses EDGE but has the ability to upgrade to 3G through a potential future upgrade.
 - Outlook on Windows cannot be synchronised with the device, although MS Exchange IMAP and POP3 mail standards are supported.
 - Apple has not confirmed whether users can customise their own ringtones.
 - The camera is capable of recording video but the current feature set does not support it.

Of course, all of this could change within the next month before release.

No news there... All already known. Add to that the fact that only Apple approved applications can be installed, you have a limited set of "smart" that can be added to the phone.

The fact it's coming out with EDGE only is strange. If it can be upgraded to WCDMA it should be now, not waiting for software updates that will be a pain to release (yes, do we know anything about how easy or hard is to upgrade this?)...

Upgrading iPod software/firmware with iTunes is incredibly easy so imagine iPhone will be the same.

I'm not sure of that.  It looks like the iPod's operating system is a mixture of different operating-system components from different vendors designed specifically for the device whereas the iPhone will run an optimized, full version of the Mac OS X operating system (without unnecessary components).  It may be easy for Mac users to upgrade the software/firmware but I'm not sure what this means for PC users.
