hi, hey quick question.

I am off to Sydney next week, thought i would swing past the apple store and grab a new iPad.

How does the GST refund work in Oz, do you register at the point of purchase and then show the unopened box at the airport with the recipt and get the GST back there?

Or can the item be opened just show the receipt at the airport?

.......and obviously pay GST on arrival in NZ

You take the reciept and the item to the tourist refund booth one the other side of the security screening point. It doesn't have to unopened, you just need to be able to show them it when they ask.

We bought a camera this year, used it and then showed them the camera in a camera bag. No problem.

Also if you have more than one receipt from the same store you can claim the total, providing the toal is over the threshold ($300 I think).

If you Google Australian TRS (Tourist Refund Scheme) then you should find all the details.

You don't need to do anything at all at the point of sale except ensure that you receive a receipt. Apple stores generally email receipts rather than printing them in store, so it would be a good idea to specifically ask them to give you a printed receipt when you purchase the item.

When you arrive at the TRS desk at the airport you just need to show the item and the receipt. It's fine if the item has been removed from the original packaging and used. You'll need to declare the item for NZ customs, but they may not necessarily charge you GST depending on how generous they're feeling on the day.

Also, whatever you do in the apple store, if it offers your NZD, ignore it (cancel U think is the button you need to hit).

I bought a 32gb iPad mini with retina. Was AUD$597 in store, I'd worked out via xe is should have been about $680NZD. But when checking out it offered me the $744NZD and I couldn't figure out how to say no (thought cancel would cancel the transaction).

But managed to get $57AUD back as part of TRS so not a complete loss. Just took the JB receipt up to the TRS counter, showed them the Ipad and handed over a credit card for them to refund to. Pretty painless.

what happens if you buy something large and it needs to go into checked luggage?

since you cant show them can you still claim?

Kitchen aids are not cheaper in oz. smith and caughys just had a big sale where they were the cheapest. Just been through that exercise

we got some AUD$ when it was very high a month or so ago and was thinking if myers discounted them during their big boxing day sale then got tax back it would of worked out cheaper than nz
