Have an iPhone 4 that I have wiped in preparation to give to my sister in-law. Wanted to install facebook for her but the appstore doesn't want to give the old version, insisting on ios 7. Knowing that ios 7 will cripple the device I'm looking for a work around or alternative?

It is already crippled by having iOS 6 installed. Just upgrade it, iOS 7.1 is not too bad on them.

I thought the app store now let you install old app versions for older ios versions?

maybe they fixed it, reviews i read were very critical of battery issues and performance degradation.

Oh well, here we go, sadly can't go back if it fails, here goes nothing.

My son used IOS7 on his iPhone 4 with no issues until he replaced it recently

Sounds encouraging, I guess critical reviews don't get updated once the problems been addressed. We will see how it goes over the next couple of weeks.
