Hi - I've read about all of the problems with iOS 8 and 4s, particularly the performance. Is performance still an issue with 8.1?

Well it's now released. I've still got 7.1 on my work phone....but since it's a work phone I really should update at some point. The problem is I hear 8 runs like a dog on a 4S. Has anyone tried 8.1 on a 4S?

Just loaded 8.1 to my son's iPhone 4s (which he uses as an iPod, as it's a hand-me-down).

Seems fine.

A little lag, but not a deal breaker.  It is a 3 year old phone (and now obsolete) after all.  Other problem is if you don't update you may find fewer apps will work (in time)...that's just how Apple rolls.

THis is the reason that we ended up handing the little fella the iPhone - he had his own iPod Touch, but as it was a 4th Gen and couldn't be upgraded to the next iteration of iOS, it became less and less fun for him - he missed out on the latest games etc, so it became a little redundant.

I my opinion it is a bit naive to hope that an official software update can make an obsolete phone faster. The best you could hope is that it stays the same.

I disagree. Both bug fixes and user feedback can lead to better performance. Not always though ;-)

I wish I could roll mine back to ios7 but Apple obviously would rather have me buy a new phone

If they had mentioned in the features perf would be worse I wouldn't have upgraded

Okay, let me put it this way,
- it is unlikely that the manufacturer will put their efforts (read money) into focusing on fixes and feedback regarding an outdated technology
- The slowdown of older model with new iOS releases is very consistent. It has been happening all the way through with iPhones. I do not remember a single time that performance of an old phone would improve with an update.
- It is in theory possible that some fixes for the newer phone could improve performance on the old phone, but it does not look like that iOS 8 has significant performance problems on the new devices. So while possible, very unlikely
- Release notes for iOS 8.1 do not mention performance improvements (aside from wifi performance).

8.1 runs fine on my 4S, and seems better (so far) than 8.0.2... Haven't dropped wifi again, and seems slightly snappier!

iOS always seems better on older products after their .1 iteration, and Apple devices are supported far longer than their android counterparts so perhaps if it's read as "will this be better for my 4s than .0.2" then the answer is definitely a "yes" from me :)

For what it's worth I also updated my 4s to 8.1 and I am not noticing any kind of performance improvements. It still lags badly.

I don't have a problem with performance issues as a phone gets older - I just don't want to upgrade my phone if will experience these issues though.
