1) the Mail app is useless for gmail as it is very SLOW to load mail? is that normal

2) to check that there is no way for Gmail app to swipe left to delete mail (instead of archive, which is what happens when I do that)

Not sure about the iOS Gmail app but on Android if you hold your finger down on a message it selects it and options like delete come up at the top

1) It's not slow for me at all, I have two different accounts set up.

2) Under the advanced settings for your Gmail account, you can choose between archiving and deleting discarded messages. Set this to delete and then the swipe action will delete the message.

I cant find that advanced settings on ios. Is it within the app or in the ios settings menu?

Settings > Mail > Choose Gmail account > Tap account, scroll down, tap advanced

Yes to number 1. We have the same issue on a range of iOS devices. Worse since iOS8 came out.

I don't belive there is any way to change the archive option in the Gmail app. Apple aren't the only 'you will do it out way' company out there! Just tap the tick box and then the bin icon up the top. Not a big deal IMO

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

Not anymore, or with out paying for google apps anyway. Try the GMail app rather than the built in mail client. GMail never syncs on my iPhone without manually going into the app.
