While I always expected it to be one of my boys, today it was me that managed to drop our iPad and in the process smash the screen (despite it being in a case and with a screen protector on).

Our insurance excess is $300, so unless it's not repairable or the repair cost will be around this amount I'm thinking it may be best just to pay to get it repaired.

I've read through a few oldish posts on recommendations for repair places, and wondered if these still hold. The one that seems to get feedback from people here is Fairfix - is this still the case? Any other places (including any in Palmerston North, where I'm located) that people would recommend?

Also, can anyone advise of the likely cost? (It's an iPad Air 4G.) That Fairfix link states "top/front glass screen repair and replacement" for an iPad Air costs $139.95 - is that indeed what I could expect to pay in total? (My question originates with my insurer stating the cost of an iPhone screen replacement charged by the place I have to go get a quote from is around $300, so I'm assuming this place will charge even more for an iPad).

Thanks for any advice.

Sounds about right price wise.

It costs me roughly $30-$40 for the parts so $100 for labour is pretty close to good value

Yes, I would expect to pay about that much.

Ended up sending the iPad up to Fairfix for it to be repaired, bit got an email today saying they were struggling to find the parts as it differed from the usual.

I bought the iPad (an Air version 1) from the Aus Apple store - wouldn't their products be identical to those sold from the NZ Apple store?
