So guess who dropped his Ipad mini on the carpet?. Like toast landing butter side down , it just caught the leg of my office chair and fractured the glass.

So Options
I have $250 excess on contents

1. Repair : Suggestions?
2. Sell broken on TM then buy another
3. Use as is until it drives me nuts
4. Claim on insurance and buy another

A friend of mine had gotten his phones screen repaired after it cracked - it wasnt the same. The touch functionality wasnt as good as before. His phone was a droid though. Maybe Apple have it better? Do you have applecare by any chance - maybe its covered?

$250 excess to get it claimed in insurance - depends on which ipad it is i guess. If it is ipad mini 2 16gb or something - might not be worth it. Maybe get some repair quotes and see how much it would cost to get it repaired and then chuck it on TM? Use the money to get the new ipad mini or ipad air?

They will arrange for collection of item and assessment repair or full replace as item is under 5 years old
Connect guy I spoke to said they usually replace.

I posted on a similar matter just a couple of weeks back - http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumId=76&topicId=170992

Unless the damage is such that it's more than just a screen replacement it's just not worth claiming insurance - our excess was $300 and the replacement scren for our iPad Air was about $170 (including shiping to/from Akld). We used Fairfix, as recommended by others on GZ, and they did a good job. Ended up taking a lot longer though as they had to find parts specific to our model (apparently it came off a different production line from the usual stock, even though we purchased it from the Australian Apple store).

Fairfix's website states the repair prices for each model of iPad; return postage was just under $10.

For a total cost of $145-$150 (including $20 for shipping, assuming you don't live in Akld), it's still going to save you at least $100 to have it repaired without involving your insurance company.

One of the things I did think in going the insurance route is that I end up with a brand new under warranty ipad again?

Anyway all good points I will sleep on it

Will it be replaced by a newer version, or do you want to upgrade its capacity and/or to a 4G model? Sometimes this can be worth it, eg my parents' iPad 2 was replaced by insurance (stolen, not broken, mind) with an Air 2, and they were able to pay the additional sum to get the 4G model.

Otherwise, you have to be satisfied that the additional $100 is worth it just to return to a 'new' state, and that also assumes the insurer will replace not repair (crazy to me, given the low cost of repair).

Personally, I'd assume the money I saved now from having our iPad repaired will come in handy to pay for the next time I or the wife or kids breaks the screen; and, if that doesn't happen, at least I already have a bit of cash free to pay for the next upgrade...

Don't forget if you claim insurance you may affect your no claims bonus.

Or buy an 2nd hand one, its probably cheaper than your excess and if you stack your no claims bonus onto the cost for the next couple of years then it works out a whole lot cheaper.

While I agree claiming on insurance is not the best solution, how many insurance companies offer a no claims bonus on contents insurance? None of the companies I've been with over the years has offered it, as far as I'm aware (we've been with AMI, Tower, and now FMG over the past 12 years). Car insurance, yes, but not come across it for contents.

Then you can get  Apple care :)

I have it on my Iphone and my Ipad both now have accidental breakage cover with $99 excess.

In the past I have had screens replaced on iphone's but they never seem to work as well after, I have found issues with the home button mostly.

The problem with replacement iPhone/iPad/iPod screens is that there aren't genuine apple ones available.
All third party and the quality can vary widely and I've never seen one that is of the the same quality as an original apple screen.

Apple replace any idevice, that is under AppleCare, with a factory refurbished one and the broken one is returned to the factory to be refurbished.

So what do you pay for Applecare coverage on a new iPad? Is the 'accidental breakage cover" additional over standard Applecare?

You pay $149 for AppleCare+ for iPads and this includes two incidents for accidental damage, which have a service fee of $75.
AppleCare+ for iPhones is also $149 but the service fee for accidental damage is $119.
