Looking at picking myself up one next week and was very interested in the voicemail txts from vodafone being able to get through on the newest firmware!

Seeing as there haven't been many posts here in the past 10-days I was wondering if everyone is still so peachy with their iPhones running on vodafone?

Working fine syncing with latest iTunes on mac leopard and PC? (7.5?)
Voicemail notification working? (depending on firmware)
Anything else I should know?

OH and where did you get yours from? Did you get a warranty? Best people to deal with?

Cheers!

:)

Not a good idea to buy an iPhone at the moment, Apple has updated the bootloader, which mean there is no unlock solution. If you do buy it will be an expensive Touch until a unlock solution is found.

I have been using an iPhone for about two weeks for now. I have to say coming from Pocket Pc (HTC Apache) and windos Mobile (i-mate SP5) background, the software much easier to use. I'm not saying windows mobile platform is hard to use, the iPhone is more intuitive. I do miss some of the features/capabilities of the pocket pc platform, but the iPhone is my ideal smartphone at the moment.

To answer your questions, I have no issues with itunes v7.5 on PC (Mine is FW v1.1.1). I highly double that Apple will honor the warranty if you unlock the iPhone.

Bought mine about 4 weeks ago... spend far too much time mucking around with it, installing software, keeping up to date with where the latest jailbreak/activation for 1.1.2 is at. All good though :) Very keen on getting 1.1.2 running as it is supposed to fix the issue with Voicemail Notification texts which the iPhone currently just drops.

I'm with STI on holding off until the latest firmware has a simple one-click jailbreak/activate/unlock solution. I have a mate who has bought one (I recommend toshbuy.com) last Thurs... we're hoping it's running 1.1.1 !!

In answer to your question, I'm running Leopard (10.5.1) and iTunes (7.5) and everyything works perfectly.

As far as enjoyment - best purchase I've made in a long time! You won't regret it :)

Cool thanks for the info guys!
Had a muck around with one at parallel imported today and it was awesome!

The 1.1.2 sounds decent to me too, I think all of the ones available at the mo are 1.1.1 though so should I try my luck and then wait for a straightforward solution to the new firmware?

If I got one from toshbuy how would I unlock it?

Expert Infotech in Auckland has them for $914 unlocked, is that a good deal?
Anything to watch out for?

:)

Cheers

If it's firmware 1.1.1 you're fine.

Not sure how much I can say on this forum... I guess because it's not illegal to unlock an iPhone I can discuss the details? (moderator, I'm sure you'll remove my comment otherwise :)) You will of course void your warranty.

$914 unlocked sounds like a good price. I would ask them how it was unlocked. I assume they've used anySim - the free option, as the IPSF (iPhone SimFree) option costs about USD$50 and the Turbo Sim (don't even go there!) also has a cost. That plus the standard cost of the phone $899 is what leads me to believe it's the free option... I could be wrong.

Personally - I bought from toshbuy.com and went with the IPSF (paid option) rather than anySim. I had read, at that time, that IPSF was also able to fix the iPhones that the anySim and iUnlock methods had bricked when people (stupidly) upgraded their phones from 1.0.2 to 1.1.1. To me that made IPSF sound like the better solution.

However, now that I've done a lot more reading up, I'm actually still trying to find out which solution is best. I think only time will tell. If you go to this site here there is a good explanation of the differences between the 2 solutions at the bottom of the page: http://iphone.unlock.no/ - the author appears to be speculating about how IPSF works but it may help you with your decision. There's also some pretty good info about jailbreaking and activating which are steps you need to perform that allows you to unlock as well as install 3rd-party apps.

The reason I am now questioning my decision of going with IPSF is after reading this on the Elite Dev Team's forum: http://rdgaccess.com/iphone-elite/viewtopic.php?t=199 - it's the first line "So you want to fix your evil IPSF unlocked phone?" that has got me a little concerned :)

From what I understand the "iPhone Elite Dev Team" are a sub-group of the "iPhone Dev Team". The elite team seem to be a friendlier bunch and allow dicussions on the IPSF solution whilst the Dev Team will remove any posts regarding IPSF.

Anyway - I'm waffling. Have a good look around and do as much research as you can.

Hopefully some of the members here can share their expertise on the anySim vs IPSF topic? Please, no fanboy type response! :P I would like, honest, non-biased opinions.

Cheers for that piksel!

Yeah I was wondering if maybe there was a right/wrong way to have the phone unlocked/jailbroken etc?

Still not totally sure I understand how it's done or what each does but:

1.)Jailbreak lets you access the phone fully to put on extra 3rd-party apps etc
2.)Unlock lets you use a vodafone sim?
(let me know if I'm mistaken) AND where does activating come in??

Maybe some of the "hardouts" get all grumpy because they disagree with charging for an unlock solution? Personally I'd rather pay for a simpler fix than have to really get stuck-in myself.

Has your phone on IPSF actually been a problem?

:)

Yep, there's 3 parts:

1) Jailbreak - need to do this to be able to install 3rd-party apps... including the ones that will unlock your phone. Jailbreaking uses the tiff exploit which has since been patched in 1.1.2.
2) Activate - this is something that Apple (bless them) have added as an extra "security measure" I guess. The phone has to be activated through iTunes as part of the normal set-up process when connecting to AT&T. Most jailbreak solutions have activation built in.
3) Unlock - as mentioned above there are 2 main software solutions anySim (free) and IPSF (not free). There is another "iUnlock", but I have not looked in to this one. Doesn't appear to have much of a following.

I can't tell you if there is a right or wrong way to do step 3 "Unlock". I'm still trying to find a definitive answer for that myself. What I can say is that I used IPSF and my iPhone is running perfectly :)

And just to clarify - there is no difference in difficulty between the 2 unlock solutions. You basically jailbreak and activate using the same process (the jailbreakme.com website is the easiest solution for this - simple instructions here: http://iphone.unlock.no/#Bypass-Activation-and-Jailbreak) and that gets you to the point where you can install either of the 2 solutions on your phone to run the unlock process. In fact the IPSF is probably slightly more involved as there is the additional step of buying a "license" from one of the many IPSF resellers and waiting until your IMEI is loaded in their database (still, it is all very simple now :)).

Just on the Jailbreak/activate solution, this is so much simpler now from when I did it only 3-4 weeks ago. I had to run through a series of steps to downgrade to 1.0.2 to apply the jailbreak, then unlock with IPSF before upgrading again to 1.1.1 and jailbreaking/activating once more. Also, at that time IPSF were teh only ones with an unlock solution.

I agree with you on the "hardouts" comment :) It's understandable and I'm definitely an advocate of open source software.

From what I understand earlier version of anySIM 1.0 modified the some sections baseband memory unintentionally. This caused iphones to brick when updating to FW v1.1.1. This is however is reversible by "virginizing" the baseband before upgrading the firmware. ISPF unlock method didn't modify baseband unnecessary therefore could upgrade without any problem. Supposedly this problem is now fixed with anySIM 1.1.

I unlocked using anySIM 1.1 by following the tutorial here.
