They said it couldn't be done or shouldn't be done; one of the two.

https://itunes.apple.com/nz/app/myfeeder/id1006069665?mt=8

This is yet another port of MyFeeder, the unofficial card reading app, this time to IOS.

Software cannot solve hardware problems, currently the only way to use IOS devices with Snapper cards is to use an external NFC reader. Fortunately, there is a cheap commercially available NFC reader that works with IOS; the ACS ACR35 NFC reader.

http://www.acs.com.hk/en/products/341/acr35-nfc-mobilemate-card-reader/

This plugs into the audio/headphone socket and will communicate with contactless cards.

The application was developed and tested on iPod Touch and should support IOS 6.1 upwards.

In summary, you can read the balance from a Snapper card and add funds to it.

Nitpicker’s corner: the iPhone 6 does support NFC for ApplePay in card emulation mode. The built-in NFC hardware does not support reading contactless cards or have an API for 3rd party developers.

I refer you to the last line of the original post. Summary; No.

It responds by emulating a card, it does not initiate reading another contactless card.

Awesome!
Next step is for all the public transport in our cities to support contactless payments and apple express travel pass. I use it in London every day, no Face ID required now for the tube, busses... anything with an oyster pad can do contactless payments.

About a year ago I signed up to a trial of Snapper's service which charges your credit card directly for each week's Snapper transactions. I was using this successfully until I recently moved to Porirua.

I wonder whether they ever converted that trial to a freely available product? If so then there would be no need to top up your Snapper card from your phone.

Great stuff... is this your app @roobarb ? Nice. I thought I was forever relegated to firing up an older Android phone to top up my Snapper card, but now it's a breeze on my iPhone X. Other family members (iPhone 7 & iPhone XR) were pleased I alerted them to this app and are using it too.

I see it doesn't 'remember' the user's credit card info, which would speed up the top-ups... is this by design or forced on the app by Apple?

Geekzone is such a wealth of useful information! Thanks.

Cheers,
Mike

The Wellington trains when I last used it still hadn't even moved to eftpos on the trains yet. The only way to pay was via CASH! Most stations also have no way to buy tickets, no self service kiosks either. So I wonder how long it will be before they move to this sort of payment!

Why would you want EFTPOS on trains? It would be a totally ridiculous move and to answer your question they will never be moving to EFTPOS for payment.

Full integrated ticketing may come to Wellington in 2022, but that relies on NZTA actually making progress with Project NEXT (which is their next gen nationwide ticketing solution which will ultimately replace HOP) and right now that's going nowhere. NEXT will be a full replacement for all public transport with tokenisation support so will be fully open loop.

Even the rollout of Beecard as the interim ticketing solution in the regions is well over a year behind schedule and only went live last month, simply because NZTA and the Minister both seem as incompetent as each other.

If we are lucky.....

NZTA's history with this project shows they are so out of their depth its not funny,

Even this article last week is talking about only trains in 2022... but for that to work properly they are going to have to fund gating of major stations, which I think will get stuck in the way too hard basket...

"Trains in Wellington would be the first to adopt the new card, before rolling out to the rest of the country.

The initially announced launch date of 2021 is now more likely to be in early 2022."

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/118636100/13-years-of-waiting-for-promised-national-public-transport-card

The other recent twist that's likely to blow the project off course "again" is the push from ride sharers to intergrade public transport services  into their offerings.. watch NZTA start talking about this as the new holy grail.....

I'm aware of the Uber push - and ironically I was discussing this with somebody when I was in the US last year who was involved with it.

There are a number of transit providers over there who are all moving towards barcode scanners rather than NFC based solutions (RTC in Vegas being one of these) because it's a very quick way of modernising their ticketing solutions and offering mobile tickets to 100% of mobile devices out there. NFC was great for closed loop systems with prepaid but as we move towards a world where open loop ticketing becomes the norm with tokenisation there is no real great need for NFC.

One of the biggest issues in NZ is just the complexity of our fare structures. In so many places overseas you have flat fare structures that are not distance/zone based. Building solutions for these is so much easier.

The Deloitte report into Project NEXT was pretty scathing. It really makes you realise and understand how they got it so wrong in the first place opting for the Thales HOP solution, but some of that influence was from AT.

Having used both trains and ferries in Auckland recently, it was interesting that AT have not gated most suburban stations and ferry terminals and simply reply on tag on/tag off pillars at strategic points. Have to say the ones at the Waiheke Island ferry terminal (both city and island ends) were very easy to miss. Seems like a recipe for fare evasion though...

Edited because last sentence didn't make sense

Train fare evasion in Wellington is considered to very low at present. A couple of years ago they ran a few days where they stopped all passengers getting off at Wellington railway station and basically caught nobody.

In other cities it's prolific - in Melbourne out of the probably dozen public transport trips I took last year I would have been checked on 10 of those trips and they have a huge number of people to check tickets.

Hi - I’ve unlocked this older thread to mention that I was recently notified of an official iOS Snapper App. So for those that didn’t receive a notification and are users in Wgtn - it seems like a well designed app to scan your card, check balance, check rides & top up -
