Hi there,

So recently was given an Apple Watch, and can't seem to ever use the ASB app on it (not in a useful way, anyway).

Whenever I open the app, it says "Please run ASB Mobile on your iPhone".

I thought maybe it was because I rebooted my phone or watch, or one of the apps was out of date etc. But after days of not rebooting and no updates, it still does it. The only way to use it is open the app on my phone, then open it on my watch. The next time I try this I get the same error. And yes, I've enabled Apple Watch in the ASB app settings.

What's the point of this app if you have to open it on your phone first anyway?

It does happen to me too. I think you may need the ASB bank app running on mobile, but I didn't get down to detail of how/why..

You'd get pretty much the same behavior with any bank app. It happens to me with the Westpac app too.

The problem is security, as you don't type your password (the bank password) on the watch, you must type it on the phone, which makes the watch app useless, I completely agree.

Btw, I just gave up on the Westpac watch app. I don't see that working properly until the watch have a Touch ID type of authentication on itself.

Yeh it's most definitely to do with security, kinda annoying there isn't some sort of option to enable quick balance viewing or something. Even the Spark app does it. I've uninstalled them because there's no point having it on the watch.

Don't quote me on this (I may be incorrect) but I am pretty sure some apps on WatchOS need the app open on the phone in order for the watch app to work - pretty useless IMO.

On Android Wear I can open up the ANZ / ASB watchapps without the apps open on my phone for an instant balance, it is seamless and very handy. With ASB I can move money around on my accounts etc again without the app open on my phone. I think WatchOS still has a little bit of catching up.

Btw, how do you authenticate on your Android watch if you want to transfer money, for example?

Auth is done through the app itself on the phone where you're able to enable accounts on the watch app (much like quick balance). You can only transfer money between your account and only the accounts you've allowed from the watchapp. It is dependant on being close to the phone to communicate with ASB.
