my i-phone 4 has started playing up

this morning I sent my wife a txt (had already sent her 2 txts no problem) and a message came up wanting the i-cloud password, so I entered in what I knew was the i-cloud password, but that didn't work.... the txt message just said 'sending'

I've since sent her 2 other txtx and she has received them and replied, but I've not received the replies

then I noticed that the battery icon at the top right of the phone doesn't show how much % is left - usually says 76% or something but doesn't show anything.

So I decided to shut the phone down completely, wait a few minutes and turn it back on... the word Hello came up and when I slide the screen to get into the phone it comes up with my works wifi network and wants me to enter in username and password - which I have no idea what that is... it's never asked me for my works wifi and password before and I can't do anything on the phone because it won't let me past

apart from going to vodafone tomorrow morning is there anything else I can do to get the phone back to how it was this morning?

If one of you have imessage turned on and the other doesn't, where at some stage both of you had it turned on ... this will happen.

I'm guessing it's not that however

Sounds like it might've automatically updated itself. The "Hello" screen pops up sometimes after a major update, and you just have to type in your iCloud email & password to get back to the home screen.

Hrm. It helps if you know your appleID/icloud credentials.

Sounds like you need to sign into imessage again.

Maybe an update has happened? (Note likely for such an old phone)

EDIT: There is an option to send as SMS instead, but your wife probably has to enable it too (in settings, messages)

thanks - there has been an update waiting for a long time (when wife owned the phone last year) but vodafone said not to do that update as it will stuff up the phone

I don't believe I clicked on the update button.....

all I know is the phone was working fine this morning and now it's not... our IT dept said to check with Vodafone, so I might give them a call

It's very frustrating!!!

Vodafone help are blimmin useless!!!

phoned their mobile ph help desk and spoke to a lady about my problem... she paused for a minute and said "I'll have to put you through to technical support" - so I get put through to another lady and have to repeat myself over again.....

the lady said I should be able to exit out / swipe out of the screen that is asking for my work wifi username / password, but I tole her I couldn't because there was no option to do so - it was stuck on that screen.... she also paused and said "can you hold the line while I ask someone"....... I waited about 12 minutes before hanging up!!!

grrrrrr.... not happy......

Try logging into to iCloud.com and/or use the site to reset your iCloud password.

What version ios did you update to? From memory. The 4 only goes to 7.2.1 and the 4s 8.3.1 or thereabouts.
Had you previously clicked into the software option?. Can you plug your iPhone into iTunes? Also if you don't remember your Apple ID. Go to www.I forgot. Apple.com where can you try to recapture the info.
I know the 2nd to last ios update had glitches for the 4s .

Close. The iPhone 4s goes all the way up to 9.3.1, the latest version.

thanks for the replies

I didn't do any update on the phone... whatever happened just happened

good news though - I got home, entered the wifi password at home and my phone seems to be behaving itself

the imessage is and was turned off... so I've got no idea what the problem was

maybe the phone must have reset itself or something because it asked for the i-cloud password and the facebook password...

It resets itself sometimes. It's called a crash. Welcome to technology.

* Hidden message from Apple to you. Your phone is archaic, you need the new $1400 phone

Haha thanks..... I was happy with my old nokia just for txt and phone... then wife decided she MUST have the $1400 i-phone and I inherited the i-phone 4s from her

Glad it's working for you but maybe next time don't have a go at your Telco. Not related to them at all!
I understand it's frustrating but having a go at them is pointless. They aren't apple support, which incidentally is 0800692773 from memory;)
