Wondering what the hold up here is, and within what timeframe you expect to see Apple Pay rolled out to New Zealand? ANZ accepting it in Australia looked like a good sign, but it appears they don't seem to care about bringing it to NZ. I've also asked ASB a few times over the past year or so and all I get is the same generic response each time - Their solution seems to be sticking that silly pay tag thing on the back of your phone (not too keen on this!).

I'm really not sure if it's the banks or Apple causing the delay here - was tempted to try and open an Australian ANZ account just to use Apple Pay - super keen to try it out, me being the nerd I am.

Yeh probably won't happen in NZ any time soon. The market is probably too small to worry about a roll out.
Amex was the first card issuer to support Apple Pay in Aussie, Canada and Singapore I believe? I reckon they'd be the first to start before any of the NZ run banks.
I too considered signing up for an ANZ account while in Melbourne (until next week) but you need an Australian address to do so.

It's handy but hasn't exactly changed my life over having a contactless card. It has this fun feature on the London Underground where it won't work seemingly when there is a giant que of people trying to get out/in. Then I have to close out and re-authenticate before it will work.

I'm looking forward to Apple Pay coming eventually. In the mean time I have a Westpac PayTag in inbetween my phone and case. It works pretty well. Sometime the reader will report "too many cards" as I guess it sees the phones NFC too, but 19/20 it works correctly.

Cheers,
Joseph

EFTPOS doesn't cost retailers so there is is no reason to ever have a surcharge. Retailers pay a flat rate for unlimited transactions.

As for Apple Pay (and Android Pay) a lot needs to go on in the background with both banks, and more importantly Visa, MasterCard and Amex for this to happen. The required platforms don't exist in NZ yet.

But there are already other banks offering HCE payments, and a few more to come in the very near future. The base of ANZ and ASB customers using Android HCE payments vastly exceeded the number of active Semble users

Semble was only ever going to be a stop-gap solution

So as I already have a UK bank account, UK iTunes account, and am going back to see family for Christmas too, if I get this setup there, is there any way/reason it would even work with the'paywave' type terminals here?

I can add my US card while in New Zealand. All you have to do it is change your region to the card issuer's country and restart your phone. The option to add a card should appear in wallet.

It would work just fine when you use it here. You can even set it up here now just change your region to UK and you'll see the options in wallet. All the charges will be in NZD though if you use it in NZ, so your bank will probably charge a fee for this conversion which could stack up over time. Also the fluctuation in currencies will mean the same coffee might cost more one day than it did the day before.

Thanks!

Would probably just use it once or twice to test before my trip, as I imagine Apple Pay would be a really convenient way to step off the plane and swipe to use the tube straight off (and other things along the way).

Then easy enough to clear the last £20-odd off when we get back too :)
