18yo daughter fell and broke the screen. Pity as she has looked after it very well, hand me down from me when one year old.

She got it fixed at a shop, $65. Its a black phone but now has a white screen. The touch is a bit harder to type on and the vibrate doesnt work. Google tells me the vibrate motor has tape or glue and that might be touching. She can get a black screen put on for free to make it all black when one comes in.

So, clearly third party.

What ballpark is a genuine screen from Youbee? @Cyabro ?

Or can this shop recheck the screen fitting if its likely to be just an install issue? Or does Apple block stuff when it detects third party parts?

Yea once there are third party parts in an Apple device, Apple will no longer help with service.
So any AASP won't be able to help.

$65 sorry but I am not sure what you were expecting? If you had returned the broken handset to Apple they would have replaced like for like under a non warranty claim. Apple do not repair screens

Non Apple screen repairs will be at your own risk and will not be genuine Apple parts sadly and will be inferior to Apple genuine parts,

The places in shopping malls are very good at telling you they are genuine parts but they are not and these places should be avoided including Dr Mobiles in Takapuna who tried to rip me off with fake parts

I don't recall saying it was my phone, nor that daughter was told they are genuine Apple parts. In retrospect I could have called Youbee to check the price, but assuming $300 or so would possibly not be worth it. Ive seen a number of occasions where third party repairs have been done and were fine, so on first thoughts if you can replace a screen for a 100 thats works normally, thats also fine. Expecting genuine Apple parts?? I'll have to re read my post...

Up until the start of the year replacement screens from 3rd parties were quite reliable however they have since developed a technique where they replace the digitizer on the original screen with another attached to the glass - in my experience these have over an 80% failure rate within 2 weeks.

There are plenty of repairers now using technology to separate the original lcd's from the broken glass and re-laminate giving a quality of screen close to the original.

Probably me speed reading again whoops. Either way in my job roll, where i deal with apple repairs daily I have had so many queries from people disappointed in their repairs from 3rd parties etc. At the end of the day, I guess it depends on how much you want to spend to repair.

The repair place should have told the OP if they were using genuine parts or not, as one would expect a repair to be with the equivalent parts. There is also CGA protection. How much do apple change for a like for like replacement, because they never offered me this? However it looks like it is probably around the same price as a brand new phone, as the 5S has dropped in price, and you can buy a brand new one for $499

Fyi Apple do screen repairs but it's a mail in service only, so you'd be without your phone for a couple of weeks.

The average consumer probably wouldn't know that apple wouldn't supply genuine parts to these repair agents. Many would think it would be a like for like replacement of parts, as that is normal when you get someone to fix something electrical. eg the electrical tech orders the part from the manufacturer.

I don't really understand the pricing of Apples own service as it looks like they charge 460ish fee to look at it, plus the screen replacement fee. This wouldn't add up, if the price for a new one if $499, as buying a new one would mean you still have the old one to sell for repair or parts, or even get repaired by buying a repair kit online. Whereas you have to send apple the broken one back to them. You would hope they don't reuse any of it in their refurbished phones.

My experience was that when Apple detected an after-market job to fit a new screen an out of warranty, or for that matter warranty work was rejected.

Thats what Cyabro said. I'll get an update today as she was due to get the white screen replaced with a black screen, and report the issue with vibrate. The touch is now working normally, maybe the screen settled into place.
