I have a first gen ipad mini - it still works fine - but I think it might be time to upgrade before it has no resale value, plus the new ones are so much lighter.

My currrent ipad mini is wifi only 16GB - and I've never run out of space on it - but Apple NZ only see 32GB and 128GB - which seems huge - and very expensive. Amazon has new mini 4's with 16GB so I'm wondering why Apple NZ is not selling the smaller size? Normally I'd buy here - but looks like Amazon might be the smart option - or is this just a temporary glitch with NZ stocks?

It looks like they've dropped some variants. I have a 64GB 4G iPad mini 4 which is no longer on their site. I got this from Noel Leeming bout 5-6 months ago? It is becuase Apple have recently updated their iPad offering. They are getting rid of all 16gb devices, as ios is going to get too big for 16GB to be usable. So if you plan on keeping it for a few years, you should get a 32 GB model. Also ipad minis are now more than 2 years old models, and the chips in the 4 and 2 are the old A8 and A7 chips. SoI believe they will be releasing a new ipad mini (pro?) early next year.
But in the meantime they have doubled the capacity of the ipad from 16Gb to 32 GB, and it should be around the same price. So avoid 16GB models as they will be old stock. Not unless you can get a very good discount.

Well Noel Leemings is selling the 16GB for the same price as Apple NZ is selling the 32GB version LOL. The 16GB on Amazon is about NZ$450 - which is about what I paid for the ipad mini original back in 2012 or so.

Surely the older devices just won't be able to upgrade the OS - which is not a biggie for me really - I'm not that in love with Apple - but my favourite travel budget app is ios onl - and an ipad is cheaper than an iphone!

I recall reading something in the news about Noels pricing of apple products, and apples website being cheaper. You can buy an iphone 5S for about $499, and an ipad mini 2 (which is a current model) is about $450. Both use the A7 chip and run iOS 10 fine.

From what I can see, an iPad Mini 4 16GB from Amazon would cost you $480 NZD + Youshop and any duty/gst.

You'll notice a huge difference going from 1 to 4. The 1st Gen is very slow now. Even going from the 1 to 2 you'll notice a big difference.

I sold an iPad Mini 4 16GB (as new condition) for $450 on TradeMe a month or two ago. That gives you a rough idea of the second hand price. You should be able to fetch $150 - $200 for your current iPad, really depends on your strategy though. $1 reserve auctions work pretty well with iPads from my experience.

I would pay $100 more for the 32GB version, just to future proof it. 16GB is gone just like that, and will have lower resale value. Also if you buy via a business, you maybe able to claim back GST.

Touch ID on the 4 vs the 2 (which doesn't have it) is also a major upgrade IMO. Although touch ID is hopeless for older people whose finger prints have worn. It doesn't work for either of my parents, and I have tried multiple times to try to gt it working for them..

Thanks for that - I was thinking a $1/reserve was the way to go - lots of people putting them on with crazy high reserves

The main reasons I used the mini is to read books, use Evernote as a recipe book in the kitchen, and use a travel budget app. I thinking about replacing it because we are going to start doing a lot more travel next year when my partner retires. The main downsides with the current ipad mini is

* it's heavy - causes my hand serious damage if I read from it too long - I think this rules out the ipad mini 2 - that's actually heavier than the ipad mini 1!

* it sometimes refuses to load a page on Chrome - seems to be a memory fault I think - seems to only happen on bigger pages.

The phone is too small to use to read or for Evernote - so that's not an option.

I hear what people are saying about 16GB being already effectively unsupported. It's a huge shame though that basically they've added $200 to the base price.

Any I'm lucky to have friends visiting from the US later this year -so I don't need to pay GST or shipping if I do buy from overseas - though at Apple seems to fairly price their products in NZ compared to the US

Pretty sure $649 was the price of the 16G when it was available, so you're getting more storage for the same $ really.
