Apple's site claims that the refurb iPads they're selling come with new batteries (wonder who's keeping an eye on whether they actually do this, because they could put anything in there and you wouldn't know until years later) and a new "outer shell". Does the outer shell include the screen?

All components go through a test to check if they need replacing or not. If they don't meet rigorous standards the components are replaced. I've had many refurbished devices since 2006 and they've all been exactly the same as retail in terms of aesthetic, performance, and reliability - though some (like iPhone refurbs from the Apple Store when I lived in Melbourne) came in plain brown boxes rather than retail boxes. Apple's refurb programme is very reliable. They all come with the standard 1 year warranty.

The outer shell probably refers to the back cover. I don't see how a screen could be referred to as a shell. Also they'd want to market it big time if they give you a new screen instead of calling it a shell!

Aren't the warranty replacement devices supplied by Apple just refurbished units? If so from the few I've seen they're indistinguishable from new.

I just brought one last week iPad mini new , I can't tell its not new screen looks new to me

Not an iPad but an example of making sure you are happy that the source is legit. China is incredible.

Wow, that doesn't look good inside. Makes you only want to get a new replacement, rather than a refurb.

I've bought a few refurbs in my time from Apple.

They have all new external components - so if you put a 'Retail New' and a 'Refurbished' iPad next to each other you wouldn't be able to tell the difference at all.

Apple replace the entire casing - back, screen, buttons, lightning port etc.
