iPad Mini 1

The screen is covered with random red squares, flashing. The squares flash randomly.

iOS works normally, I can shut down and start apps, go to settings etc.

I shut it down and restarted normally as that does housekeeping. No joy

I did the hard restart, no joy.

Possible clues, is that its full, a gazillion apps open, so shut them off. She never updates apps, I did that a while back. I doubt she added any apps recently, if at all. She is just a user

Now, when I restarted it, the Apple logo is fine, this leads me to believe its not the video chips, but iOS.

I will back it up tonight, I assume that ONLY backs up user data, doesnt touch iOS? So that if I do a wipe, install, and restore I might get a clean and fixed iOS, plus all her stuff back? Rather than restoring the fault, assuming the fault is iOS. I shall delete anything I can first.

Any ideas or clues?

Be careful,

An ipad Mini 1 can't do IOS 10, and Apple are no longer signing IOS9,

so any IOS restore will have to be from an existing (complete) backup

Hmm. I'll see when its home, what is has, iOS version wise. I thought the backup was just user data? It would also be oldish too, so I will backup tonight first.

If there is an option for an iOS update, shall I backup first, then allow it to update iOS?

That's not true, you will always be able to restore an iOS device to the latest version of iOS that was supported on it.

So in your case iTunes will still download and install iOS 9.3.5. without an issue.

Its back home. There is an update to 9.3.5 to do, shall I do that after running a backup? That may even fix it.

Yup do a backup first, either to iCloud or iTunes.

No joy

Updated apps, backed up, updated successfully to 9.3.5 and same as before. Tomorrow I will reset it to out of the box status, see if its normal then. If it is, will restore.

Its borked it seems.

Reset Settings. No

Erased and restored. No

Entered DFU mode, hoping its firmware. No.

Off to get her a Mini 4 128GB at 649, thats a better option than a 64GB Refurbed Mini 4 at 499, although 64 would be more than enough.

Got the wife a Mini 4 yesterday, Targus rotating case, all setup and done.

Can I take it that the issue on the Mini 1 is the screen? It all works fine, apart from the screen artifacts. Given that the value of this iPad is zero, and it can go in the bin, whats the ballpark cost of a new screen? If not too bad, and it will fix it (no guarantee I guess) Id like to replace the screen and give it away.

Ballpark OOBE price?

Ballpark third party price? Im in ChCh
