Since getting an iPhone from work, I figured I'd try using the wallet on it to store some cards..... but no joy.

Found that most of the cards I have don't have bar codes etc necessary for them to work via a phone app. Only one I found I have that might work is my library card. So entered the details off that into the wallet app, and went off to the library.....

Their scanners cant read it. Lady at the counter said theyve had a few people mention it to them.

So, is using wallet apps on mobile phones a waste of time in NZ, or am I just having a bad run of supported cards/retailers equipment ? :)

I use Stocard on my iPhone. Doesn't work with Countdown but works with Flybuys, New World and a few others. I don't use the apple wallet. I'd love NZTA to release an app which would allow me to not carry my drivers licence. Then, with Apple Pay I'd hardly need to carry cards at all.

I have not found a single use for the Wallet app. Alas it's one of the few apps that you can't delete!

Havent added my Flybuys one yet, will do that tonight and if I can find my New World and Countdown cards, will try those as well - I dont do much shopping so never use the things but SWMBO sends me out occasionally so be handy to have everything on hand.

...and pay road tolls.

Off topic slightly - I'm sure the Police would love a facial recognition or thumb print scanning app judging by the number of people who try to give them false details on the police reality shows.

I used Stocard on a S7 Edge. Works well in most cases, but Mitre10 can't read the Airpoints code or whatever it is - maybe the phone brightness is turned up too high?

Is this like the ANZ Visa paywave thing? If so, that works.

+1 stocard

Doesn't help that the likes of new world have laser only readers. They can't do 2d reads like Z counter machines (pretty sure can't use the pumps)

I use Stockard.

BP (+ coffee card)
Countdown
Electrical licence
Farmers card
Airnz
Flybuys
Kathmandu
Subway

Etc etc

If their readers don't read it, the operator adds it in manually.

99% of barcode scanners are a laser that can't read LCD screens which makes apps such as this pretty much useless.

It's a pity that there isn't some sort of unique "card ID" on a Paywave card (not the credit card number itself, but a "safe" identifier that can't be used for payments). You would then theoretically register your loyalty account against your Paywave card/phone, so you only have to wave the one item to both get your discounts/points, and to pay.

Or preferably the retailers could just drop the prices for everyone instead of wasting money and effort on a loyalty system... good luck with that though!

Do you guys who use this tech have a back up method of payment like an EFTPOS card at least?

I always carry my debit card with me in case, because more often than not I’m driving so I need my licence and bring my wallet anyway.

Are the AirNZ scanners not laser? I'm thinking the check-in kiosks and the gate scanners. And I always scan my phone at the movies too? Or am I just linking a red light with lasers?
