Anybody had much experience with third party repairers of iphones?

I cracked my 7+ screen today (and not wanting to be phoneless for a week or so if I go the official route as we live in palmy) thought to ask if anyone had used someone who wasn't apple.

You will lose any warranty and probably waterproofing and who knows what else...

There are at least two "official" repairers now in Wellington. Just call Apple to get details.

My son's 5s had a broken screen and these guys http://www.smartphonerepairs.co.nz/ were very good. Fast, reasonably priced and friendly.

As already advised a third party repair for a 7 Plus probably not a good idea.
We’ve seen some dodgy screen replacements from them.
None that we’ve seen have put new adhesive on before fitting the new screen, so no more water resistance.
And even if they did would you trust them to have done it correctly?
There’s also a special press we have to put the iPhones into, after closing them up, to ensure the screen and adhesive are fitted correctly. I very much doubt any third party would have one of those.

Unfortunately all Apple screen replacements do have to be done at their service centre in Auckland so it does mean you’ll be without your iPhone for a few days.

Do it once and do it right. I’m sure you will survive a few days without a phone.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

I work for a third party repairer (but this is strictly my own personal opinion and not my employers). We do thousands of iPhone screens per year. I've personally changed probably a hundred iPhone 7 screens since they came out.

You absolutely do get what you pay for. Some of the screens I've seen have been awful quality. I broke my own 7 Plus last year - I sent it to Apple. Take that as you will ;)

Gutted bro. I've got a Samsung Galaxy S2 that works perfectly if you wanna borrow that while yours is away for repair? Otherwise maybe time to beg the wife for a new phone. I hear the X is very pretty.

I Broke my old iPhone a number of years ago.

I called up Apple and they said they could repair the old phone (Replace it with a refurbished same model).
I would have had to send it in first and they would send the new one back.

Like you, I didn't want to be without a phone, so for a $50 fee they sent the new one in advance (with a charge of a full priced new one hanging over my head) and allowed me to hang onto the new one for up to three days while I re synced the new one from the old one (only took a couple of hours).

This took one phone call, they sent all the shipping bags, pre paid.

I wouldn't hesitate in doing this again.

I have repaired iPhones myself before, but having an officially repaired unit is way better.

Thabks for the replies.
Looks like going the official route is the way to go going by peoples experiences/advice.
And to be fair given its only a differnece of about $80 or so its probably a better option

We do replace adhesive, however we still tell them that the devices will no longer be water resistant (as that's not something we can guarantee) and to send it to an AASP if this is a concern.
