With Vodafone at least, you can do it online. Free if more than 9 months ownership. $30 if not - https://www.vodafone.co.nz/help/mobile-phones/unlock/

 

Not sure why you would pay a third party.

Depending on the carrier, you can normally contact them directly. 

 

I've had 3 iPhones unlocked by AT&T's chat team - I just advise I'm in New Zealand and the device is no longer going to be used on the AT&T network and they've unlocked them - Depending on the carrier/circumstances your situation may vary.
