I’m taking my approx 4 year old iPhone 6 in for battery replacement next week.

They’ll do it while I wait and said they’ll do a direct battery swap. So only Guarantee the battery.

Do I need to wipe everything off phone before going in? I.e my bank applics show balances without signing in.

Thanks, phone down to 41% and only been on 9 hours, most time in standby, battery capacity 87%.

Make sure you have the phone backed up to either iCloud or iTunes and make sure you know your Apple ID password. I would suggest making sure you have a passcode on the phone so they can't get into it.

If you want the official version then go to https://support.apple.com/en-nz/HT201557

Nope you should be fine. It is quite a straight-forward replacement.

CYaBro: AASP or a third party?

I think 3rd party, Eserve. They said will do on spot, would a AASP do it while wait?

Phone is well out of warranty period, still happy with phone, just the battery is not lasting.

On one AASP web site it says to remove pass code lock, for a battery change I can’t understand why necessary.

AASP would require find my iPhone to be turned off and would need access to iOS, so they can run diagnostics, to confirm that the battery does need to be replaced, and that once the new battery is in everything is working.
Most of our customers are happy to give us their passcode but if you’re not then back it up and erase it before taking it in.
Not sure if an AASP would do it while you wait, we tell people three to four hours, but they do need to book an appointment.

My experience has been receiving a fully refurbished replacement out of a whitelabel box when dealing with apple directly (uk), the reason they wanted FMI off was - iirc - that they will refurb the phone you give them and then reuse in the same way. Therefore I did a backup and factory reset.

We have a 5s my wife uses and it needs a new battery. Apple will still replace this, so I have been wondering if they run it the same here.

This might be worth considering the context above:

“On December 28, 2017, Apple announced a price reduction on the out-of-warranty battery replacement price for iPhone 6 or later devices, effective through the end of 2018.”

I understand why people go to 3rd parties for screen replacements but why on earth would you do it for a battery replacement, especially given the current pricing?

I’ve booked it in now. Didn’t know about third party and AASP before as didn’t think about it.
If they ask for pass code I’ll use that as reason not to have it done, and go to AASP.

And yep, they are about $50 more expensive.

Edit: in earlier post you had, make sure pass code on phone so they can’t get into it.

AASP wants pass code. I don’t think all my applics are on Apple store now, so even if I back up phone I will lose some applics if I delete everything.

One other thing to be aware of, once you’ve got a third party battery in an iPhone, Apple will refuse to service it, if you did ever go to them in the future.
They don’t care about other parts but a 3rd party battery is a no go.

Cheers, I’m just trying to get a bit more life out of current phone.

If it doesn’t work, or phone breaks down year later then time to get new phone.

If phone one or two years be a bit more concerned about future servicing.

See what happens....

I have not heard of AASPs having to have the passcode to be able to run diagnostics on the phone, but I also don't work for an AASP so wouldn't know exactly what they require. The link I put in my original post are the only instructions that Apple give to customers. They don't actually say to turn off Find my iPhone but to be in a position to turn it off in case the phone is being replaced or needs to be erased.

Get the original battery.  Too many horror stories from non OEM ones.  Cheap at the moment too, about $60 I think.

From the comments here I’ve taken phone to authorised Apple place.

Had to give them phone pin, so now they’ve got access to Facebook, all my email notifications and everything, before went in told me didn’t need Password, which I mistakenly took as not needing pin.
They were referring to Apple password.

Also they said phone is slightly bent so will do best they can??

I remembered when phones came out there was a thing about iPhone 6 bending, it’s been in a pocket over a four year period, never back pocket, so if phones can be bent real easily they become unrepairable?

Said battery didn’t need replacing, 586 charge cycles, to me it feels like I’ve charged it well over 1200 times at 50% and below, and also the performance management if turned off would give more life out of battery per charge but could be unexpected shut downs. From my perspective battery seems to be draining over twice as fast as what it use to, and the big power gobbler is Safari, usually around 33%

As it’s being done cheap at moment went for battery replacement, fingers crossed it goes well, seems a lot harder then what it should be.
