So, being budget conscious, I thought I'd look for an 8Gb phone, probably 1st gen.

But then when I thought about it, my modest music collection is 2-3Gb, I'm going to have photos on the device, then applications, and the OS itself...

Is even 16Gb small capacity for this device?

My iPhone is only 4GB (1st gen baby) and I never fill that up. Mind you I don't really use it for its iPod features so I don't need all that space for music.

Remember it's only a low quality 2MP camera so let's hope you don't get anywhere near 100mb in photo's taken with the device. If you're talking about uploading your own collection from the computer, how large is it? The applications shouldn't take up much at all and I assume the OS isn't over 100mb. 8GB should be plenty.
