I got hit by this late last week, it was a massive inconvenience too but I didn't realise at the time it was more than just me.  Anyone here had this issue too?

Yep,

Then there was ONLY two ways for me to unlock, one was to use another Apple device with my Apple ID or GPS location (Don't have) or go into a store (Nope not falling for that trap)

My own third option: Call up and abuse the hell out of some Apple rep = Success.

Yes! This happened to me just yesterday morning. I foolishly went through the process by following the prompts on my iPhone without considering that it might be a scam or something. So far, everything seems to be alright but in the future I should really hold off before tapping prompts randomly like that.

Recently, few weeks ago though, I had a mandatory password reset for my Apple ID. No specific information as to why. First time this has happened to me and my account is pretty old, @mac.com.
