which one should i get?
AFAIK:
3g cons:
The 3g gps is pretty rubbish. Not that i ever use gps anyway
Theres no 3g in my area
the 3g has a lower battery life

3g=2g
Both running 2.0 on vfnz
both working with data
both have wow factor
neither can do video recording
both jailbroken

2g cons
2g (no 3g here anyway)
larger size (how much larger?)
recessed headphone jack

Now for price: (both 16gb)
2g=~$800
3g=~$1300

Is the 3g really $500 more amazing that the 2g?

i would you have 3g but 900mhz and no good for the current iphone 3g.

You thread topic really is your answer....whats right for you can only be decieded by you....you think is important may not be important to someone else.

Is the difference worth $500 as you say?....proberly not...the only 'substanial' upgrades/features you get for that is the data speed and gps...

But what might be worth considering paying the extra money for the device, is the fact the 3g device is offically supported here in NZ by Vodafone and reatilers...

That means you get Vodafone support for configuring the device and network issues, and the device itself is covered under NZ laws for warrantys, right of return etc etc, and a local base to return to for fixes and replacements, rather than having to send overseas for fixes or replacements, the time and money involved in that process, not to mention the uncertaincy of your rights, how the device is covered in a foreign country...

It also means ya dont have to jailbreak the device.

ill probably jailbreak it anyway, for those apps that are too good fro app store ;)

guess its 3g then. Things can only get better in the future. And i do want the warranty

My 3G reception is shocking at home as well, so bad in fact i HAVE to disable it otherwise I miss txt's

I live two blocks north of the 4 avenues around Christchurch City centre. Living so close to the city I would never have expected such bad 3G reception.

Why do you say the 3G gps is pretty rubbish? Mines as accurate as my old eTrex used to be. I'm just waiting for a slightly better app that does routes and waypoints etc.

BTW the 3G is the slightly larger device, its a touch thicker.

i want offline maps. Im still leaning toward the 3g, mainly for the warranty. And the headphone jack

I've read the 3G is thicker, plus a silicon case i have which was designed for a 2G is slightly stretched when on my 3G.

I've also read articles about people modifiying docks built for 2G to shave off a bit because the 3G is fatter.

As an original iPhone 2G owner since Nov 07, I may be biased,
but I have no real use for 3G as my house and workplace are in 2.5G (GPRS) areas. I do not frequent downtown AK so therefore will not usually be in 3G areas. As for GPS, I have a Tomtom nav device... when else will you need to know exactly where you? hmmmm

frankly, my iPhone 1.0 running 2.0 firmware is absolutely fine, the 2.0 firmware is buggy as hell and really needs a really quick fix from Apple (due soon evidentally) so yeah, I wouldnt personally pay over the top for the new 3G device...

however I will say that the iPhone is THE device to have, the appstore, plus all the features of the iPhone leave EVERY OTHER device for dead. and no I don't own a MAC.

The iPhone is awesome for tech inclined people.. and the h@ck movement are helping it along in leaps and bounds.

at the end of the day it is OTY

Don't ask for a lighter load, rather a stronger back.
