Bought an iPhone directly from apple that I'm not happy with. Want to try switching to another iPhone, but I'd like to buy the second one before returning the first so I can compare the two to be sure. Just wondering if it really is as painless as Apple's site makes it sound.

Never have issues returning directly to Apple.
Never tried a third party retailer, you might have issues.

Incredibly painless.

They ask, but don't force you to answer. Simply saying you changed your mind, or don't like the colour, or thought it would be smaller, larger, lighter.. all valid reasons as far as Apple is concerned to return items.

When buying Apple kit directly from Apple that qualifies for a 14-day return.. always:

1) Keep the shipping box that it shipped in.

2) Keep the device packaging in good condition, and all accessories in the box when not being used.

3) Put your device in a cheap silicon case (even with the plastic protection still wrapped around the phone). While evaluating the device, who cares what it looks like.

Provided the item is returned undamaged (scratches on the screen are considered damage) with all accessories, Apple will refund your CC within 1-2 days of receiving the item in their processing depot.

Not an iPhone but I have returned a Blackmagic external GPU on the final return day and it was completely no hassle. I just called them and said I wanted to return it and they arranged the courier pickup.

I have returned iPhones and many other things, no problems. They normally arrange the courier to come pick up and the money is always back in the account within 10 days.
