I am trying to help an elderly family member decide on a new ipad. They currently have an air 2 which is fine and they will still use for travelling, but the fingerprint sensor doesn't work for them as their fingerprints are quite worn. They are wanting a slightly larger screen and apple pencil. Not sure if the second gen finger print reader on the newer models is any better for this. The new air has just been released but only comes in 2 sizes. I felt the 64Gb was too small considering their current air 2 is also 64 Gb and they currently use between 40-50 Gb. But the next size up is 256GB, which is significantly more at $1099. They are willing to spend around that amount as long as it lasts them at least 3 years like the air 2 has. But I was looking at the ipad pro 11 which has the all new  and more modern design, face ID (which would benefit them) better screen with pro motion, better speakers, face ID, better camera etc, more ram, faster processor  and it is only around $160 more on special than the air 3 in the 256GB model. But the downside is that it is only 64GB at that price and the 256GB model is another $350. Also it does lack a headphone jack, and I have heard some can suffer from bending issues. . I am wondering if anyone else is deciding on which of these two to purchase, and which one makes sense. Is 64GB too little diskspace for an ipad in terms of future proofing it? Their first ipad was the ipad 2 nearly 10 years ago, and the one they got was 64GB back then! If the air came in 128GB and was a couple of hundred cheaper to make up for it, that would be a winner, but it doesn't. They certainly don't need 256Gb, 128Gb would have been fine. In terms of use, they write emails, take the odd photo, watch ondemand tv on it, use pages and numbers etc. So not high demand stuff, but they would benefit from a larger screen that also had better sound, and both models do provide better experiences than the ipad air 2. My concern with the air 3 is that it is a dated design that hasn't progressed much since the air 2, only 3Gb of RAM and slower processor than the A12X for futher proofing speed, no  promotion display and I think they would benefit from face ID rather than having to type in the passcode each time. What do others think?

Starting with storage, what is the main use? can they use cloud storage to save room.

With the Pro, Is the lack of headphone jack a deal breaker? For an extra 100 I'd take the spec bump over storage, I mostly stream or use cloud storage so its a no brainer

They do have a lot of photos stored on their current one which is using much of the space, and the camera on the pad pro is a significantly better camera which would use up more space. They could use icloud but I think they have reached the limit of the free account on that. I suppose the way around this is to regularly download the photos off the ipad onto the PC. I am definitely leaning towards the pro as it is significantly better on paper. My main concern in terms of space, is whether the apps and os will increase so much in size that it uses up the 64GB.

Google photos offer free unlimited storage for HQ (16mp/1080p) or for higher res it counts towards your Google Drive quota, remember that's cloud, what you want in higher res can still be stored on board.

I would go pro. Speakers are better etc. I use the 64gb 11” pro for work and love it

Thanks. I think that confirms it. It also does look far more modern as well.

Have you considered going to the Apple online store and looking at a 10.5" iPad Pro refurbished? Has the specs that are a bump up from what they have, also has a marginally larger screen, but adds Pr-Motion and Pencil support.

Quad speakers and a solid chassis are pluses too, IMO.

If cost not a problem, new pro. If cost is a concern, prev gen pro.

I have a 12.9 1st gen pro and there is nothing lacking so I don't see any need to upgrade for a few years.

I think current pro and prev gen have few difference. A bit more difference the further back you go, and it's not much cheaper.

I am having this same debate. My iPad is now six years old and won't run an app I need and the home button ceased to work months ago. I'd like the 64 GB pro 11 vs the lower spec Air but the bendy issue looks widespread and that's what is stopping me. When are the next round of pros due out from Apple?

There is no “widespread bendy issue”.

The Gen 2 Apple Pencil is much better than the Gen 1 Pencil. However, Gen 2 Pencil is only supported by some (Pro) iPads. And Gen 1 Pencils, being charged via lightening connector, aren’t compatible with USB-C charge ports.

If the Pencil usage is important, then check compatibility of Gen 1 / Gen 2 against the purchased iPad, and factor that in. Also factor in USB-C connector versus Lightening.

Those two points do make a difference, even though they seem small.

Got a Pro 11 64 and a Dux Plus case which is nice and rigid.
Edit: facial rec is awesome.

The problem I have found with facial rec on an ipad, is that I never have it close enough to my face, or at the right angle to work. So I always have to move in more. Touch ID is better IMO. But the future is likely full screen touch ID, and probably facial rec for increased security.

Try redoing Face ID and move your head around. Mine works even in the dark laying sideways (reading in bed). Occasionally I am blocking the camera with my hand and have to move my hand because I almost always have it in landscape. Face ID on the iPad and surface is one of my favourite tech things.
