Hmmmm , This seems to be a pretty serious breach, How could this have been sold as a new phone.

Either Apple are to blame, or Smiths City have been purchasing used iPhones and passing off as new? Hopefully Smiths City will comment and enlighten?

Talk around says it’s demo info that are on display models. A few comments in the stuff link also says this

It's clearly demo content from the photos.  Big Sur Road Trip Itinerary is a dead giveaway since it's usually in the keynote screenshots.  I bet there is a contact called John Appleseed on the phone.

Looking at the photos in the story, that appears correct (eg. photos reference Lake Tahoe). Of course these comments aren't rabid enough to appear higher than those wanting to lynch Smith’s City and/or Apple.

So he was provided a specific hardware device destined for display - and someone accidently handed it out as a BAU model?

This should be in the stupid headlines thread.

Except if you pay new price (esp. for an overpriced iPhone) you don't expect to receive a display model, do you?

Not investigating their story enough, and subsequently reporting a minor issue as if a huge privacy breach had taken place. Seems like a stupid headline to me.

They would have just taken the wrong box off the storeroom shelf. Big whoop. It's not like they gave him a used display phone. The box was surely sealed, and if it wasn't more fool the buyer.

Stupid headline is the tag for the paper for publishing the story. Nothing to do with the consumer. He has the right to get a brand new replacement.

Still, whoever wrote the story didn't investigate enough.

Doing proper investigative journalism doesn't bring in the bait for their clicks though..
