Hey guys,

I'm wanting to upgrade my old iPhone 6s.  Does anyone know the best cost effective time of year to upgrade your iOS device.  I'm looking at getting the 7/7 Plus at the end of its cycle.  I see you can purchase a 6s for around $499 at the moment and was wondering if there is anything documented online when the 6 will be discontinued and the 7 will fill its place?

From an Apple standpoint the 6S is discontinued, and in less than a month I'd think the 7 will be discontinued. New iPhone announcement should be around September 13.

Depends on how long you want ios updates for. The iphone 6s is still quite a fast phone and will get ios 13. What is your reason for upgrading? You are best to wait until iphone 11 and iphone pro is released, as it instantly ages the older models by a year and apple usually decreases the pricing on older models. Although NZs exchange rate at the moment sucks, so not sure how pricing will work out.

Right at the moment, a 7 or 7 Plus will cost you more than it's worth through a reputable reseller.

You might be able to pick up something through a non-official channel, but buyer beware.

Personally, I'd go for an iPhone 8 if you're thinking of a 7. It's not that much different, but will be supported for an additional year over the 7 and also has slightly upgraded specs.

You're looking at around $1000 for a 64gb iPhone 8, where a 7 (which will be unsupported a year earlier than the 8) will likely cost you around the same for a 128gb.

For the PLus size, add a couple of hundy to the price.

Apple products don't get heavily discounted and any that are are usually second hand or "refurbished"...but not by Apple.

I'd avoid any refurb that's not direct from Apple.

Currently speculation is heavily centred on an announcement in the week 9-13 September( Apple are fond of Tuesdays/Wednesdays -[US time] which would be the 10th/11th  (our 11th/12th)

A few days ago, from Dick Smith email mailer, they had iPhone range on sale.

And here's Dick Smith's iPhone range page: https://www.dicksmith.co.nz/dn/shop/phones/iphone/

Thanks so much for all your input!  Looks like I only need to wait a couple of weeks for the new announcement.  I'll be keeping a close eye on the iPhone 8 😄 I've had my 6s for a few years now and basically needing to upgrade due to battery and general wear and tear of the device.  Happy paying under 1k if possible but not too keen on spending 2k plus for mobile at this stage.

The MacRumors Buying Guide is an excellent resource that shows you the time since a product was introduced and the average time between refreshes. Also shows simple Buy/Don’t Buy advice. Highly recommended.

Cheers,
Joseph

My wife a few months ago bought an IPhone XR and it’s great. Basically as good, if not better, than my X. Apart from no OLED screen. Otherwise it’s an excellent device.

My 7+ decided to throw a fit with camera app, and calling became quite a bit of a guess work. All works fine after a reboot. So basically it's less reliable as a telecommunication device, and less than ideal as a camera. So it's been "demoted" as gloried iPod Touch which is great. I replaced it with XP (PRODUCT)RED with the intention to upgrade to 11 Max - then my XR will be a hand-me-down to my ex.

CNET is likely wrong on the naming. Apparently the XR will be scrapped, and the new version will just be called the iphone 11. Than the flagship models will be the iphone pro and iphone pro max with pencil support. Then early next year there will likely be a new iphone SE, which will be based on the iphone 8 shell, just with updated specs. Will be interesting to see if this all eventuates
