For some reason I don't have much luck with iPhones and hot spotting.....

User has an iPhone 7 with fairly recent iOS update.

Three weeks ago he contacted us advising his hot spotting was working as in far as allowing the laptop to talk to the phone. But no internet traffic. A colleague played around and eventually got the thing to work by running ipconfig /renew on the laptop.

Been fine until today. Back to the original issue. But now the renew wont work, gives him error that a DHCP server is not found. When checking the IP settings on the laptop, het gets issued a 192.168.1.xx address but no gateway or DNS.

To me, this says its a phone related issue - found some info that it could be APN related, but hes not touched the APN and its set to "vodafone".

What am I missing... I cant get him to bring it in as hes down the line.

192.168.1.x wouldn't be from the hotspot.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

Yeah i was wondering about that - they do use that range in his office LAN but cant see where its pulling that from.

Its the original address that was bound. My iPhone 6s currently has same Voda hotspot issue.

If this is not already done I always find hotspotting (especially in public places) to be much more successful if the iPhone has a name other than iPhone. This means when device is not trying to connect to everyone elses iPhone that is hotspotted.

The hotspot name is the name of the iPhone, this can be changed in the "general", "about" settings.

If you change this obviously you will have to re setup the devices which connect to the iPhone, but this maybe a good thing.

https://support.apple.com/en-nz/HT203302 might be of use. First thing I would ask is if they have deleted the network on the computer and then re-connected to the hotspot on the phone?

What OS is the laptop running? How is the hotspot connected (WiFi / Bluetooth / USB)?

WiFI hotspot. In my case the client laptop is running W7. Hotspot has been working for many years. Wifi connects and no IP address is assigned. I suppose calling Voda is the next option.

But seriously I’ve always found the fix for this is to simply restart the iPhone and if that fails to then also restart the laptop. It seems iPhones are so reliable when someone gets a glitch on one that they feel it must be something more serious and forget the basics.

Also note that especially with windows 10, it can take up to 30 seconds sometimes for the hotspot to start working - just long enough to annoy the end user into trying things to make it work when they only need to wait a bit. This is especially so for the first tether.

Ensure data is also working on the iPhone ie have them try visiting a website that they haven’t been to before.

On the iPhone try getting them to run a reset of the mobile settings, then reset of network settings.

Do check with Vodafone, we’ve had some weirdness with data plans set at zero for example. You can also request a config of the number which requires the phone to be turned off for 5 minutes.

In my case problem follows the cell tower, i.e., I just tested at home and hotspot works as it should.

Windows 7, hotspotting via wifi. Im going to get them to get into their office onto the network and remote into the laptop, its almost like its pulling some network settings from somewhere that it shouldnt be.

i haven't seen it mentioned anywhere here yet, have you validated they aren't on a plan that can't hotspot?

I've had this issue on site several times but I can usually resolve it by forgetting the network and removing the profile in windows (as touched on above), removing any static addressing on the adapter, restarting my iphone etc... but it sounds like you've tried all that
