I'm thinking of buying a Pro Max to replace my iPhone 8 Plus. Currently I have used less than 20Gb of storage on my existing phone, so I'm thinking that the 64Gb variant should be good enough.

What I'm wondering is whether the system software on the Pro Max takes up more storage than on the iPhone 8 due to the higher resolution display? In other words, if I were to migrate the content from my old phone to the new one, would it consume more than the existing 20Gb?

8 has 3GB ram, 11 has 4.

no matter what the extra features are, you’ve probably got enough. I’d suggest the performance of ios13 is more important, as Apple broke multitasking on earlier versions, and I’m not convinced they’ve fixed everything yet

You'll be fine with the 64GB.  That's all I've ever bought in recent years since everything I use is in various cloud services, so similar use case to you.  The only things I tend to keep local are camera things I shoot on a particular day (photos/video), favourite music, and some podcasts or synced Plex/Netflix stuff if I'm travelling.  But that's mainly in service of not using too much mobile data since Spark took away my extra 4GB deal after 12 months, so I'm back down to 4GB :(

Thanks for the feedback guys. I half expected people to tell me I'd be nuts to buy a 64Gb version, but I have an 'unlimited' data plan and all my stuff is in iCloud so it sounds like I'll be fine.

You’ll be fine. I was exactly the same as you, went from the 8 Plus to the Pro Max with 64GB, and it’s been absolutely fine. My storage usage was about the same as yours.

I am just stunned that people are able to cope with less storage than a minimum of 128gb...I'm on a 256gb XS Max and only have around 20gb left (which feels comparatively small...I guess I am just old-fashioned and rely on physical storage more than the cloud.

My 64GB iPhone 8 is currently telling me I'm only using 26GB. I can't possibly imagine what you'd have on your phone that requires 200GB+! I just hope it's all backed up!

Ha ha...always backed up - every day without fail...

What's on it? That's a good question actually. I'll have to take a look at some stage

So, this morning I ended up buying a XS Max. I know, it's last year's model, but it has everything I need and I got a good deal which allowed me to get the 256Gb version within my budget.

I still don't expect to ever use more than 64Gb, but from a future-proofing perspective it's good to know that the extra storage is there if I need it. I want an expensive phone like this to last a while!

Thanks again for sharing your thoughts.

I am sure you will be fine.

My Samsung Galaxy S10+ currently has something like 750GB of storage (512 on board + a micro SD) and I think I might have used 30GB...!

I believe you made a good choice as the 11 model isnt much of an upgrade considering the price. 2020 will be a defining year for iphone with a major redesign coming and 5G.

Yeah, having used it for a week I'm really happy with my choice. The main differences between the XS Max vs 11 Pro Max seem to be camera related and that doesn't particularly interest me as I prefer to use a 'real' camera for any photographic work that really matters.

At JB Hifi I ended up paying $450 less than the equivalent 11 Pro Max which I think was a good deal, and I see that they have since knocked off another $100.
