I've just downloaded some photos from my iphone to my pc - directly using the windows import function.

What's happened is that I'm getting three files - IMG_xxxx, and IMG_Exxxx and IMG_xxxx.AAE

The first two are the same photo (albeit slightly differently cropped) with different sizes. The .AAE file is tiny and can't be viewed.

Keen to know what the three files are and which of the two images is the better one to keep

The .aae is like a txt file that keeps track of edits or something - the other file is probably some clever auto enhance thing on the iPhone and it's keeping the original file too.

Yes - I did see that discussion before posting here. However, I'm not convinced. I hardly ever edit photos on the phone, but almost all (but interestingly not all) of my photos have the _E duplicate.

Is probably some auto-enhance thing the iPhone is doing itself, or possibly if you are choosing a specific shooting 'mode' the camera software may make some changes to the image.
