I read that iPhone 3G in Australia is unlocked.
Does it mean it can be used here as well even
on Vodafone prepay ?

It's very relevant. Why do you want to bring an Australian model over here?

The iPhone sold in NZ isn't locked either and can be used On Account or on Prepay.

As pointed out already the iPhone 3G sold in New Zealand is not locked either, so bringing one from Australia will only make it harder to get warranty repairs or replacement if needed to...

And I've moved this discussion to the correct Mac OS X Mobile forum.

Thanks for the reply. That's basically what I needed
to know. I thought the iPhone NZ can only be used on
Account only. And I don't want to change my phone
number. My assumption was the phone needs to
be unlocked to continue on Pre-pay.

Follow-up question is, can I download iPhone app
even if I'm on pre-pay ? Download on my desktop
and then transfer to the iPhone. Not downloading
directly from iPhone connecting to the net.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Well if you bothered to do the a little bit of research you will see changing from Prepay to On account (vice versa) on Vodafone NZ you can keep the same mobile number.

The plan you are/aren't on would only effect the cost of the data over the Vodafone network. So if you're on pre-paid for example downloading Apps over the air would be relatively expensive.

However you are correct, you can always just download Apps via the desktop client (iTunes) and sync to your iPhone at no cost.
