I’d never bothered with Apple Pay, but just set it up as contactless payment at the supermarket now seems like a pretty good idea.

But do you still need to enter a pin on the EFTPOS terminal for purchases over $80 even when using Apple Pay?

Yes still need to enter pin. Shop light and keep it under $80

Oddly I can use apple pay at Z self serve and fill up over $80 without pin which I've always found strange.

I regularly make purchases over $80 with Apple Pay and don't need to enter a PIN, e.g. my ~$200 shop at Countdown yesterday.

Merchants can opt to waive the PIN requirement for device such as Apple Pay or Google Pay.

You mean contactless payment - because this includes Apple Pay, Google Pay, Mastercard Contactless, Visa Paywave... It's not an Apple-only thing.

Lets hope all the Supermarkets are doing this then.

Shopping light means shopping for frequently, $80 of groceries wouldn't last 3 days for us.

Personally I never have to enter a pin for Apple Pay and I use it 90% of the time.

I even bought my oven on Apple Pay without a pin requirement.

I thought the Paywave limit was $80, but the Apple pay limit was somewhere north of $200 (because it is more secure, having faceID or touch ID).

Pretty happy to see many merchants that previously didn't use paywave have quickly got on board now that reduced contact is so important (and banks are waiving the extra fees).

Apple Pay and Google Pay (or whatever it's called) can be considered authenticated payments (i.e. not requiring PIN) as the security to enable a payment is seen as the authenticating step...i.e. fingerprint, Face ID etc.

BUT - it has to be set up when the retailer and the EFTPOS/POS provider do their bit...

So supermarkets theoretically will allow the transactions to go ahead without PIN and some gas stations...but it's a bit hit and miss with a lot of contactless retailers not being set up for this.

I had to enter a PIN into the EFTPOS terminal at New World for our $330 shop.

A bit disconcerting when you go through the whole exercise being so careful, and then you have to touch the keypad that all the customers before you have touched :(

take a disinfectant wipe with you or wear gloves then take them off once out of the shop.

Our Masterton Pak'n'Save disinfects each EFTPOS Terminal after each customer, and that includes the self-service ones. You don't stack your groceries on the belt until you are called forward by the Checkout person or the self-service supervisor.

Use the corner of the card to tap in the code... the 2m distance means it’s highly unlikely anyone is close enough to see it anyway 😉

I used Apple Pay for my $225 shop at New World yesterday and I don't recall having to enter a PIN.

Paul - Am I remembering rightly that you are based in Christchurch? I think Foodstuffs have some operational separation between the North and South Islands, so I'm guessing that the POS may be configured differently on either side of the strait.
