Soooo, the developers have had 2.2 (beta 2) software for a few days and Apple seems to be deliberately holding off releasing their new ipod touch mic/controls headphones for some reason as well and have been all month. There are rumours of changes to google maps (street view, walking routes, car routes now added), safari's layout (no flash player yet) and also app store app  changes , also no cut and paste yet or push. Oh, I did read they will now support line in audio.

Anybody heard anything else about the update?

FM radio sure would be nice. Or bluetooth headphone ability. Or cut and paste.

Since it's a full point update and not a 2.1.2 it must be some sort of big deal.
I wonder why they're delaying the headphones? It's a pain since I'm waiting for them!

I don't see how FM radio will be impemented without hardware support. Unfortunately bluetooth headphone or cut and paste won't be in 2.2 according to those who seed 2.2.

It's my understanding the Nike bluetooth chip in the ipod 2G is capable of both bluetooth and FM radio. :)
It's kind of like the ipod touch 1G which was perfectly capable of audio in except Apple didn't want it to do that.
However, I suspect we won't be seeing either. Not having radio is really annoying. Aside from cut and paste it's on top of my wish list. I doubt we'll ever see FM radio as Apple just does not seem to care about it.

Got any ideas what else might be in there?
Though in actual fact the stuff that's been leaked seems to be enought to justify the number bump.
It's just not anything I particularly care about. :P

BTW, you seen the new Google Earth app at the app store? I grabbed it last night but haven't tried it out yet. (it's free)

Hi JayADee, is there is any particular reason you've specified iPod Touch 2G there and not just iPod Touch? Is there a rumour that 2.2 will not be available for the first gen touch?

That's a darn good question. We have one of each here. The new line in function is the only leaked change I can think that may be 2G only. But early on the ipod touch 1G supported sound input with modified third party hardware until Apple did something in one of the firmware versions that stopped it.

I don't know much about hardware.

It would be cool if the first gen touch could get sound in.
I certainly haven't heard any rumours that it's going to be 2 gen only but then the first and second gen ARE running slightly different firmware already, with the second gen at 2.1.1 so I suppose it's possible that there may be two slightly different firmware upgrades to take into account the slightly different hardware features on the 2G.

I'm sure they'll release most of the goodies to the 1G as well though; it's hardly old tech! (and frankly in some respects the 1G works better)

I think they'll release something nearly equivalent to a 2G version if there is one - along with a price tag

That would be mean. :(

I'm on my second 2G, btw. Apple warranty replacement for screwed up wifi. And here I am with the newly arrived (today) one and having what appears to be an identical problem. I really, really hope not. I had no trouble whatsoever with the 1G. It's bugging me like crazy. Gah!!!

Edit: spelling

Thank goodness I've still got my Gen 1.

I do have troubles with my Wi-Fi, but that's occasionally, and it usually is resolved with a restart or even a renewed lease.

This one, like the previous one I sent back, will NOT connect to our router if the wifi was shut off on the ipod at the time of shutting down the ipod. OTOH, it will connect fine if the wifi is left ON when the ipod is shut down. By shut down I mean totally shut down, not asleep.

This means I have to reboot the ipod to get wifi most of the time. It's a  particular PITA when you're doing something at the same time like listening to an audio book, but it's a PITA at any time, really. It also means half the time I can't tell if there's a network problem or if it's just my flakey wifi again.

I'm aware there's a problem with D-link routers and there is even a fix posted on one of the groups, but this is happening with my workplace Belkin and my home Netgear. The netgear is using WPA psk with MAC address filtering and the Belkin is using just Mac addressing.

Our first gen ipod touch has no problem with either home or work, set up identically with a different IP and neither does either of our laptops.

Got any ideas? It's got me really bummed. I'm going to try shutting off the mac address filtering next and see if that helps.

Edit: A few hours later and nothing is fixing this. :((

tried:  setting/unsetting static ip on ipod, didnt work
disabling mac address filtering, didn't work
disabling ip address reservation by mac address, keeping static IP, didn't work
Turn router as dhcp server ON. (normally all my ip's are set)
Change dns back to get from isp from preset on router...and back again
and finally...restoring back to factory fresh firmware.

And through it all the 1g (which I stupidly passed on to the husband) works just fine. GAAAAHHH!

Edit two: Well, tried everything and actually the situation has deteriorated. The wifi will only work if I "forget" the network settings and input the whole lot over again manually. Even just turning the wifi back on and off causes it to happen and a restart doesn't help. I'm calling the apple store again tomorrow for probably another return. With shipping both ways this is really starting to add up. :(

So yeah, last update. Turned off my wireless router, put settings in ipod, turned on wireless router, clicked connect on ipod. Now it's back to just the same error my other (returned) one gave me. Which is at least less work typing but still a major fault. So now I'm sitting on the phone (not literally!) waiting for the apple support centre to open so  I can get them to send me yet another one. Too late for my trip. :((

Hmmm not really for that specific problem, but... why do you manually switch off wifi AND completely shut your iPod down? I leave my wifi switched on always and never completely shut the thing down unless I'm needing to reboot for some reason. I actually find that rebooting takes up a good chunk of battery life so unless you don't use it very often I find 'sleep' more economical on the battery. The only reason I ask is that it would seem to me that not doing those things would eliminate the problem for you...?

I found that too - so I always leave mine on - so easy to just get it in and out of standby rather than powering it down every night.

Thanks for listening to the moaning. What I've done is turn dhcp on in my router (I shouldn't have to, static ips work just fine for the 1G and every other wireless laptop in the house) :P and that seems to have helped. I'll muck around with it and see exactly how improved it is. I do wish it would just work as well as the 1G's wifi. As it is I need to renew the dhcp lease every time and turn the wifi on and off.

Anyway, an update to get back on topic: I just read that there will be an iTunes podcast downloader in the new firmware. You will not need to sync them anymore if you got wif.

The main reason I haven't been making more use of podcasts (there are a few freebie ones I want to listen to) is that. So I guess there's one more thing for me to do on the 'Pod. :)

It's been a while so I'm double posting.
2.2 software finally fixes the flaky wifi problem the 2g Touch was having. It now works flawlessly like the 1G does. This was a major headache and I'm glad it's fixed.
Reportedly, the iphone gets streetview on google maps and the touch doesn't. Boo!
All the other info about this update is available online and of course when you update. Remember to update itunes FIRST as a new version came out two days ago. :)
