Any suggestions for storing all my photos so still easily accessible as can’t back up my iPad to iCloud because my storage is full and I don’t want to buy more storage with a monthly cost.

Your best option is to spend the $3 a month for extra iCloud storage and just run Photos out of that, rather than locally on your iPad.  Either that or buy a new iPad with more storage if you don't want an ongoing subscription.  But, I mean, that's dumb.

Google Photos? Not sure if it stores full quality.

Alternately you can get a sync tool and sync to any cloud storage - Dropbox, AWS S3, B2, your PC. I backup photos from my Android phone to my PC using Resilio Sync, works great.

But it's probably cheaper and easier overall to pay for a bit more storage space on iCloud.

I have already bought a new iPad with larger capacity and in the process of setting up. I don’t mind paying a one off fee but don’t want a subscription which is what iCloud offers.

Thanks. Just checked google photos and seems to have unlimited storage and someone with an Apple commented on how great it is.

Wondering if one can easily use it to order prints off it, as that's the next big job once I can offload the photos somewhere.

Pay it annually instead of monthly then, it'll feel like a one off payment every year :)

You get to choose from 15GB "original quality photo backup" or unlimited "high quality" photo backup. High quality is unlimited but the photo quality is downgraded and resized.

I used to have Picasa on an old windows laptop that’s lurking in a closet also waiting for attention. Wonder if Picasa is connected with Google Photo's or can sync. Does anyone know?

I am so thrilled. Many thanks. Downloaded the Google Photo app and hundreds of photos that must have been stuck somewhere in google cloud turned up. It’s still churning away trying to save the ones in the iPad. Lovely surprise.

No. That's what forced a lot of people off Picasa a couiple of years ago.

Can’t see any way to send photos away for printing within the photo app. Am I missing something? Maybe only available on Windows platform.

Try the Kingston DataTraveller Bolt Duo. Copies or moves videos & photos to USB flash drive which you can then access from your PC. Review on thegadgeteer.com

  • From the camera app, if you do a review of the photo, it still uses Apple Photos 😬
  • Remember to open Google Photos regularly to give it a chance to back up the photos to Google Cloud
  • Check the settings to keep your device clean / optimised ( Settings > Manage device storage > Free up space )
  • Consider giving Google Photos access to location data

Thank you all. The photos I found on google were precious old family ones. I don’t know how they got there but had been lost after various trips overseas and laptop changes. Luckily when I downloaded the app, I used the password that google offered rather than make a new one, otherwise would never have seen them.

The USB thingie looks good too as a back up.

I use drop box to sync them off to my PC, then just copy them out of the dropbox folder into a photos folder when it fills up (have 8GB free), and just keep a small number on the ipad. Also use google photos, but I don't think the unlimited photo are full resolution. IMO peopel shoud always have a backup anyway and not rely on the icloud, as that isn't a backup. If they are only on icloud, then you could lose them if something happens to their servers or your account.  They probably have something in the terms saying that you must also backup yur data. I am not sure of you can also back them up using itunes and a PC. I haven't done that for many years.
